Too American? Assume it's a girl?

Can't make my mind up and dp loves it.

LOVE IT! Desperately wanted it for a boy but DH wouldn't let me because of the insult connotation.
We're also just on Season 3 of Breaking Bad so definitely think Pinkman. Not necessarily a bad thing... 😬

Hearing it I would think girl but seeing the spelling I would think boy

I'm not a big fan tbh

Great name. Jesse Wood, Ronnie Wood's son, married to Fearne Cotton is a good example of a Jesse who's English, a man, not a cowboy, and hot to boot

I knew a boy Jesse at school, he got the utter piss ripped out of him. I’m in Scotland.
He ended up trying to get everyone to call him Jerry instead and insisted that was his real name. Was very sad actually.

I don’t think it has negative connotations outside of Scotland though.

Why is Jesse so badly perceived in Scotland?

Report

I’m not sure the origins but it’s basically an insult to call a boy or man effeminate or weak. A bit like a big girls blouse.

Absolutely love it for a boy!

I don't think it's just an insult in Scotland -
growing up in the North/Midlands I've heard 'you big jessie' used to mean soft or weak. Although my first thought was Jessie from Toy Story.

I wouldnt think it was a girls name. Youd usually hear a girl called Jess or Jessica, but rarely Jessie/Jesse

I think its fairly unisex

I have a Jesse.

I imagined a floppy haired surf dude... and he’s a floppy haired technology geek. 😂

We worried about using it because of every negative connotation that’s been raised here, but we honestly loved it too much. So he has a very strong, masculine middle name he can change to should he want to, and he’s excellent at put downs for anyone rude enough to say anything about his name. We really needn’t have worried, he totally owns it.

As for the rest - well once when I commented on here about the name, someone replied that they ‘would never sleep with someone called Jesse’ Which was actually quite a relief as I wouldn’t want my son to have a partner who was so shallow and judgmental.

I'm from the south and we also used the phrase 'you big Jessie' to mean a big girls blouse.

I think American male. But that’s not a bad thing. Lots of very American sounding names around now like Woody, Harrison, Dexter.

ChickenPoetry thank you for restoring my faith 🖤😂 just what I wanted to see. And floppy haired technology geeks with an acid tongue are so in vogue, love it!

I love it!

Most Jessicas I know are known as Jess rather than Jessie. I definitely see Jesse as a boys name & quite a cool one too.

I know a Jesse and wasn't keen on the name at first but he is the nicest, gentlest, happy-go-lucky boy you could wish to meet.

I think boys name/Breaking Bad. But then also think about the song Jessie, by Joshua Kadison. Lovely song. About SJP allegedly.

It's a boy's name to me.

Report
Laqueue · 05/01/2018 19:28

It was the name of my mothers beloved younger cat who died before Christmas and his full name was Jesse James.

To me, that's who comes to mind- the outlaw Jesse James for whom the furball was named.

I know the spelling is different, but I think of song when I hear Jesse. Not saying it's bad though, I like the song! Grin

I love it! Only didn't shortlist it because where we live it is a word for gay or something along those lines.
