Too American? Assume it's a girl?

Can't make my mind up and dp loves it.

I love it for a boy or girl. It's a really kind sounding name

namechange2222 · 14/11/2017 10:35

Breaking bad

3Boys1Mum · 14/11/2017 10:35

Love Jesse.

Instantly think boy and then Cher’s Jesse James plays in my head (not a bad thing)

SloanePeterson · 14/11/2017 10:37

I think Ethan Hawke in Before Sunrise. I agree it's a kind sounding name. A friend has a Jesse and he's the sweetest boy, so it's a great name to my ears.

buzzbuzzbumblebee · 14/11/2017 10:45

I know a girl called Jessica, and a boy called Jesse.

If I hear Jesse now, I tend to think boy.

I don’t actually know any girls who go by Jessie - just Jess or Jessica.

Grimmfebruary · 14/11/2017 10:46

Oooh you're all swaying me more towards it! I'm expecting a little skater dude if he's anything like his dad and I think he needs a cool name for that 😂

My grandmother was Jesse and she was posh English born over 100 years ago so it has been around for a while...

calzone · 14/11/2017 10:47

I LOVE how it looks but hate how it sounds.

Jesse is a cool name but I don't like the eee sound.

steppemum · 14/11/2017 10:53

I know a few Jessies - girls short for jessica etc.

But I also know 2 male Jesse's aged 15 and 10.

No-one seems to bat an eyelid or think they are female, Jesse is a very very old male name, it came way before jessie did.

It is a Biblical name, father of King David.

I think that as it has its own spelling you should be fine

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 14/11/2017 10:56

Too many girls are called Jessie, it sounds very feminine and too wet for a boy for me.

dowotmakesuhappy · 14/11/2017 11:40

That spelling, American boy. If I heard it so didn;t see the spelling, I would think its a girl in her early teens.

Grimmfebruary · 14/11/2017 11:43

I do think seeing it written down makes all the difference, it's really starting to grow on me tbh. We still have time though!

I love it. If you’re worried it’s too out there or considered a girl’s name, don’t be. It entered the Top 100 for boys last year. Great name.

whiskyowl · 14/11/2017 12:31

... I think of Jesse in Breaking Bad, shortly followed by Jesse James.

Mol1628 · 14/11/2017 12:35

I know of a 5yo Jesse. It works well for a boy I think.

HettyB · 14/11/2017 12:41

I love it (for a boy) but DH vetoed it

Grimmfebruary · 14/11/2017 12:52

I didn't realise it was in the top 100. I knew it wasn't extremely popular though!

I had said to dp I didn't want a name that ended with an eeeee sound due to the amount of family we have with that ending, but after dp has tried to convince me that randy, chuck, Bruce, Brian and Dave were good name choices I'll relax a bit 😂

Sorry, but it always reminds me of the insult thrown at lads ' dnt b such a jesse'. Hate hearing it , horrid thing to say, but I could never use it as a name as a result

deptfordgirl · 14/11/2017 13:59

I think of Jesse from the Bible story. I really like it.

17caterpillars1mouse · 14/11/2017 14:03

I know one Jesse and 2 Jessie's so heading it out loud I wouldn't assume either way. Seeing it written down I would think boy

Grimmfebruary · 14/11/2017 14:10

I know it is used as an insult (I have a Glaswegian uncle!) but it's not really used as an insult where were are. It's growing on me slowly haha.

BoredOnMatLeave · 14/11/2017 14:12

I do like it for a boy but I work with a male Jesse and everyone who calls for him assumes he is a woman before they speak to him

DuggeeHugs · 14/11/2017 16:23

The only Jesse I know is a 4yo girl, but it's a nice name and I think it works for girls and boys

notangelinajolie · 14/11/2017 16:37

In in the part of the UK I'm from, calling a boy a Jessie/Jessy is a derogatory term for an effeminate, weak, or oversensitive man.

drinkswineoutofamug · 14/11/2017 17:53

I always think of Jessie from toy story, the brave, fearless cowgirl, who just wants to be played with and loved.
