Naming DC after animal?

TempStamos · 16/10/2017 17:16

Ttc, not pregnant yet. All my DC have unusual names and DP and I are wanting to name the next after an animal eg Fox, Puma, Bear.

Does anyone have ideas for animal names that could be used for both boys and girls?
Or do you think we are mad and that naming children after animals is tacky?

Yes, sorry. I really dislike Bear in particular. Makes me think of the gladiators of 90s Saturday night Tv, weren't they called stuff like Puma and Rhino?

Montacute · 16/10/2017 17:37

I was hoping it was going to be after Animal from The Muppets.

M4Dad · 16/10/2017 17:38

My son's second name is Llew - Which is Welsh for Lion.

Depends on the animal.

Raven - fine
Drake - fine
Cat (nickname) - fine
Robin - fine
Jay - fine
Phoenix - fine

Names linked to animals like Lionel, Leo etc are also fine.

Names with animal meanings in other languages - often also fine.

If you go flat out and name your kid Giraffe, Llama or Ring Tailed Lemur (being younique, naturally!) you deserve to be put in the local zoo with your 'inspiration'.

PoppyPopcorn · 16/10/2017 17:42

Naming children after animals is awful, sorry.

Unless you go for something like Leo, Robin or Paloma (dove in Spanish).

Inneedofacookeddinner · 16/10/2017 17:42

Phoenix, Wren, Robin/Robyn, Tiger (thinking Tiger-Lily here) Raven...a lot of bird names it seems.
Be prepared for negativity OP. I personally like quirky names but lots of people don't. Children have such a range of names nowadays other kids won't bat an eyelid at an unusual classmate...adults are much more cruel.

fedupoflivinglikethis · 16/10/2017 17:43

I like Fox!

Not bear or puma though.

MyWhatICallNameChange · 16/10/2017 17:43

Squirrel?
Duck-billed platypus?

Fox
Bear
Raven

JustHereForThePooStories · 16/10/2017 17:44

Badger?

Are favourites are:
Girl: Kitty , Fawn , Bunny and Puma.
Boy: Fox , Bear , Tiger and Wolf.

There unusual but we like unusual names, but I am seeing a rise in animal inspired baby names.
Surely it isn’t hugely different to naming after a Place/Flower/Jewel etc?

Love Kitty. Also love Raven but only as a taken on name as I think only a certain type of man suits it.

PoppyPopcorn · 16/10/2017 17:52

So basically, call a boy after something strong, fierce and at the top of the food chain. Call a girl after something cutesy and fluffy, and don't even use the proper name of "rabbit" or "cat", but Kitty or Bunny.

FFS.

TempStamos · 16/10/2017 17:53

@JustHereForThePooStories

I actually really like badger!

And yes I'm prepared for negativity, I got a lot of that from friends and family when naming my other DC. But none of them have every had any problem at school etc.

I'm also not a fan using names in other languages, can often be hard for others to spell/say and noone knows what it means.

Dick billed platypus! 😂😂 imagine!!

I like the idea OP, what’s “normal” anyway be different. I have such a boring name and wish my mother had been a bit adventurous!

Orson also means bear.

@PoppyPopcorn

Nothing to do with that, just out of the animal names we liked those are the ones that we thought suited best as a boy or a girl name.
Don't like Bunny and Kitty for a boy and dont like the names Rabbit or Cat.
We like Puma for a girl, and mentioned Leopard but thought it was too much.

Linnet

Jooni · 16/10/2017 18:05

MN hates animal names generally, just to warn you...

I like Kitty and Wolf best of your favourites.

Bird names tend to work quite well:

Wren
Sparrow
Linnet
Lark
Kestrel
Falcon
Hawk
Dove
Finch
Pipit
Swan
Kittiwake
Peregrine
Rook

Zeelove · 16/10/2017 18:07

At least you thought Leapard was too much! Hmm

Your girls names are ok..... well not really but they are not totally unheard of. Fox? Tiger? Wolf? It sounds so so try hard.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 16/10/2017 18:09

I love Bunny, Fox Tiger and Wolf.
I see Puma as a brand rather than an animal.

Vegangelist · 16/10/2017 18:11

I say go for it.
I don't feel many are unisex though. But I suppose you can make it so!

Would you consider thinking outside the box animal names?
e.g.
Channing - young wolf
Thorbjorn - thunder bear
Orson - bear cub

Other ideas:
Finch, Lark, Anemone, Birdie
Melisande - honey bee

TempStamos · 16/10/2017 18:15

Yes, I do see that the boys names seem more OTT.

I have always found giving my other DC unusual names has helped them be more confident/ individual etc. Gives them a talking point when meeting new people

Also Griffin.

Would really love to know what your other DCs are called!
