Naming DC after animal?

146 replies

TempStamos · 16/10/2017 17:16

Ttc, not pregnant yet. All my DC have unusual names and DP and I are wanting to name the next after an animal eg Fox, Puma, Bear.

Does anyone have ideas for animal names that could be used for both boys and girls?
Or do you think we are mad and that naming children after animals is tacky?

@Clitoria

No she dosnt have a star, its a Mila with a normal i. But she is 3 and likes to draw the star on top of the i.
Yes I have 6 kids (aged 3-22).
They all have one first name and 2 middle names (is that very unusual?)

@HappyLollipop

Just realised I typed that wrong, eldest is Dakota Duchess Day (minorly regret the complete alliteration) Youngest is Mila Moon Rose.

@IsThisTheRealYou
I am based in the UK now. Beverly was adopted whilst living in America but has never had any problems with his name in the UK. Didnt chose Duchess twice, just realised my mistake when people commented about it. Youngest is Mila Moon Rose and yes she is 3 and just likes stars, it is just a normal i.

I'd go as far as Brock (colloquial for badger)
Maybe Wolf as a middle name, or Bear but I think that's been "done".
Kitty is cute and can be shortened from Catherine.

BewareOfDragons: Torbjörn is old Norse for Thunder Bear
I begged DH for this to go on our list, or at least Torbion but he declined. If only he'd known howl much DS trumps. ...

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 20/10/2017 15:00

Oh for God's sake Hmm. Call them anything at all, it hardly matters as you probably won't be able to remember the names anyway. You got two of your children's names wrong?
I suppose that happens when you have a whole battalion

MyDcAreMarvel · 20/10/2017 15:03

" I do have a Harley" you have already gone done the tacky route then, so at least all your dc will match.

TempStamos · 20/10/2017 15:05

@Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar

I will name them what I like, as I have done. Just asking for suggestions and opinions, as i thought this site was for?
I accidently typed out my eldest's middle name twice. But yes having 6 children, it does take me a minute to get all their names, birthdays, ages etc right. But I know people with only one or two who still make mistakes.

@MyDcAreMarvel

Harleys tacky? Your opinion, thats fine. He likes his name.

Harley is far from the worst name out there. At least OP hasn't named her child Pilot Inspektor or Jermajesty or any other wacky celebrity name.

IsThisTheRealYou · 20/10/2017 17:36

I guessed you were American or had American ties from your choice of names. I used to know kids called Harley and Dakota when I lived there. Dakota was a very popular name.

I can't believe you suggested the name Bear when you already have a child called Teddy. 😂 I hope you were just joshing us....

TempStamos · 20/10/2017 17:44

@IsThisTheRealYou

To be honest I hadnt even considered it yet. Me and DP were just talking about using an animal name for our next child, so I asked on here for suggestions, Bear was just one of the examples I gave. Obviously if we were actualy pregnant and choosing names, Bear would of been ruled out. (although I do really like it)

I know a female Squirrel, and although Robin is on our list for DD (and I also liked Wren and Jay), think some other animal names are a step too far.

tempstamos · 21/10/2017 21:12

@GoldenFleck

Very funny!

@PetitErmitage

Thats pretty!

@bakingmad83

I like squirrel and Robin! Yeah I think so too, but I think mine and DP's step may be just a little higher than most peoples.

I think one thing about having a name like "bunny" or "kitty" is that it's only suitable for young, cute children. My ex had a cutesy name too and ditched it while she was in university because she thought it'd look ridiculous on any name card or when said in any boardroom.

tempstamos · 22/10/2017 13:46

@BlackPepperCrab

We get that and will keep it in mind, thanks.

I love your kids names, we are on similar wavelengths - we were struggling to find any names we liked with my youngest and he was named after reading the link above - also named after an animal and was the only child that year named it (we live in a village and a lady asked me his name in the drs one day and told me there was an old genelteman in the village called that too which I thought was cool). All of my kids have 3 names tooSmile

tempstamos · 23/10/2017 19:59

@1981trouble

Thanks for the article!
We are definitely convinced we want to use an animal name now.
