Not pregnant, just thinking

What middle name would you give Seamus? Something simple as surname is quite a difficult Irish name

I want to like Seamus Adam and Seamus Edward but there's something not quite right

Semen and Seamus sound the same?
Semen is SEA MEN
Seamus
SHAY MUS

TheDowagerCuntess · 29/07/2017 01:28

It sounds too much like semen, sorry

😂

How embarrassing for you.

I think a middle name needs to begin with a vowel.

squiggleirl · 29/07/2017 09:01

Laighean pronounced Lane

That's not how Laighean is pronounced. That spelling's pronounced 'Lie-an' or 'Line'.

If you want a pronunciation of 'Lane', it'd be spelled 'Léan'.

IrishNameThreadNameChange · 29/07/2017 11:49

I've namechanged for this so as not to out my regular username.

If you want a pronunciation of 'Lane', it'd be spelled 'Léan'.

This is interesting as my name in Irish is Léan but when I was first told it by my Irish teacher he pronounced it "Len". We are in Ulster. However my friend is from Dundalk and calls me "Lane"

frid · 29/07/2017 12:33

wobblywonderwoman, I've been stewing on Seamus Owen and it does sound good

TheDowagerCuntess, I agree, I think. I seem to be leaning towards vowels

Who knew Seamus would be so controversial. Back in Ireland it's just a normal/old man name.

Lemondrop99 · 29/07/2017 18:45

I'm English and have lived in London my whole life, and I also consider Seamus a perfectly normal name! I think it's relatively well known as far as Irish names go, and I'm baffled by the pronnoucation problems/semen comments Confused

Seamus is lovely. And Seamus Owen sounds great together.

TuttiFruttiCutie · 29/07/2017 20:04

Michael gets my vote

TuttiFruttiCutie · 29/07/2017 20:05

Or George but that might be a bit St. George.....

Ryan

Having three Irish names can be a mouthful for English people.

Prepare for him to have to spell his name again and again and then be known as Mick or Paddy anyway.

I've never been racially abused anywhere in my life except in the UK for being Irish.
Maybe be safe rather than sorry especially post brexit.

I'd still go for James, and let him call himself Seamus when he emigrates to the EU or beyond.

MeanAger · 02/08/2017 20:39

Having three Irish names can be a mouthful for English people.

Who is going to be using all 3 of his names other than his mother when he is in trouble? Grin at most people will be saying his first name followed by surname. But generally it will just be people calling him by his first name. Which isn't a difficult one.

ScarletForYa · 02/08/2017 20:42

Cathal !

TriskelArts · 02/08/2017 20:43

Gosh, has Brexit released a flood of particularly ignorant Little Englanders into Baby Names?

Honestly, the fact that you can't pronounce a perfectly ordinary name from a neighbouring culture is no reason for someone not to use it. Addressed to certain individuals, obviously, not the thread at large.

Floggingmolly · 02/08/2017 20:46

Let's see what they make of that, Scarlet!

ScarletForYa · 03/08/2017 00:16

MwooooohuuuhuuuHaaaHAaaaAaaAaa! Grin

OkPedro · 03/08/2017 00:40

An Irish person who is actually discriminating against Irish names 🤔

Ah yes the brits are so stupid that they'll refer to any Irish boy or man as "mick or paddy" For Fuck Sake!

I find it funny when I've been outside Ireland, hearing how people try to pronounce my name. It's not a big deal

mathanxiety · 05/08/2017 07:09

Seamus Ardal is a lovely choice, imo, OP.

Irish names Anglicised:
Seamus Killian (with the K spelling)
Seamus Moling (obscure Irish saint)
Seamus Lazerian or Laserian (obscure Irish saint)
Seamus Colman (saint from Lindisfarne)

Otherwise:
Seamus Theodore
Seamus Conrad
Seamus Benedict
Seamus Ambrose
Seamus Luke
Seamus Maximillian
Seamus Raphael
Seamus Anselm
Seamus Jude
Seamus Raftery (NOT Rafferty) after the Irish poet Antoine Ó Raifteirí/Anthony Raftery.

mathanxiety · 05/08/2017 07:10

(I love Seamus, btw)

mathanxiety · 05/08/2017 07:30

Also Seamus Oliver

lazydog · 05/08/2017 07:43

I love Seamus.

How about Liam (or William if you prefer the anglicised version)...?

I do also think Alexander goes really well with Seamus. But not if your surname starts with a "D".

Kellyturnbull · 15/08/2017 01:06

Seamus Munro is my Fave
My hubbys name is Douglas Munro
We named our boy Shay Douglas but did consider Shay Munro

I also love Seamus Patrick and Seamus Malone

I'm scottish and love the name Seamus.. genuinely feel embarrassed for the (sounds like semen) comments Hmm

TheRollingCrone · 15/08/2017 02:29

Seamus Owen is my favourite so far
Seamus Lawrence
Seamus Dominic
Seamus Francis (maybe too many s's there )
Seamus Henry
Seamus Kevin (after Kevin Barry)
Seamus Ferdia

Seamus is a great name. Bit Shock at all the "semen" comments!

LadyB49 · 15/08/2017 09:12

Seamus Aiden
Seamus Flynn

If using a second name starting with a vowel take note if the initials spell a word when put together.

pingu73 · 15/08/2017 09:16

Hugh
