It seems a little pointless to question why people with different accents pronounce things in a different way. It's quite obvious really.

steppemum · 11/07/2017 09:24

well Francis is a family name in our family, and it is reularly pronounced both ways by different people, according to their accents.

There is not a 'correct' way any more than there is a correct way to pronounce grass.

And even the country France is pronounced with a short or a long a depending on your regional accent.

The only thing I would sya is that Fran is nearly always pronounced with a short a by everyone, although some do say Frarn.

Yep.

StarHeartDiamond · 11/07/2017 13:40

Op I think we can ascertain from responses that if you say FrARN-ses that some other people will say FrAN-ses and if you're ok with that then go ahead! Smile

ScarletSienna · 11/07/2017 18:29

Constance, what do you want those of us to with SE accents to say? Because we don't say Sahm for Sam, we must be pn Frances incorrectly? Some words are said differently in different accents. Our accent means some words have short vowel sounds and some don't. It's not consistent but that doesn't make it wrong. I'm not sure what you're trying to prove?

BlackbirdSingsInTheDeadOfNight · 11/07/2017 18:52

It's my middle name. Pronounced Frarnces. I have an SE accent but my dad is from NI and he too pronounces it Frarnces.

Someone on another name thread the other day accused me of "missing the point" just because I pronounced a name differently to her. Different accent, different pronunciation, different opinion....

BertrandRussell · 11/07/2017 20:34

Loads of women in my family have Frarnces as a second name too.......Grin

hazeydays14 · 11/07/2017 20:39

Lots of women in our family have Francis as a surname name and we pronounce it Fran-sis where fran rhymes with Gran. We are Welsh but not Welsh speakers, have a moderate accent

Wonder if we're related Bert Grin

Ceebs85 · 12/07/2017 01:11

If you say barth and grahhs for bath and grass it's gonna be Frahn-ces

Frances if you say grass and bath.

Think about whether or not the north/south divide would bother you x

Out2pasture · 12/07/2017 01:21

Fran Sis

bookworm14 · 12/07/2017 14:33

What a bonkers thread. Never knew so many people were unaware how regional accents work. Southerners aren't being deliberately obtuse by saying 'Frarn-siss'; that's just how the name is pronounced here, same as how we say 'Frarnce' for the country and not 'Frants'.

MrsBakedBean · 12/07/2017 14:36

~Gosh a lot of you lot speak funny. Where do you get that extra R from.

It's Fran-siss, just how it looks.

bookworm14 · 12/07/2017 14:38

Not if you're in the south east, it isn't.

Scrumpington · 12/07/2017 14:39

It reads as though accents are a whole new concept to some people. Have you been banned from setting foot outside your village of birth in order to avoid the corrupting influence of the modern world?

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 12/07/2017 14:40

Nope, not to me.

This. Surely everyone is aware that some words are pronounced differently by region, e.g. 'bath' vs 'bahth'? 'Frances' is one of those words.

WillRikersExtraNipple · 12/07/2017 15:04

I think you misunderstood the point, which is why you change SOME names "because its different in your accent" and not others, even though they are almost identical.
So you say Frarnces but not Frarnk.

Not sure how much clearer it can be, tbh?

What's your point?Confused

WillRikersExtraNipple · 12/07/2017 15:07

If you're bored then its not actually compulsory to either read or type, you know?

WillRikersExtraNipple · 12/07/2017 15:07

What's your point?confused

It's outlined above. Honestly, is this the hard of thinking section of the forum?

squoosh · 12/07/2017 15:11

Can you really not understand that an accent can pronounce letters differently depending on their placement in a word?

Once you get your head around the concept that English is irregular and English accents also have a lot of irregularities you’ll find this far less discombobulating.

squoosh · 12/07/2017 15:11

Honestly, is this the hard of thinking section of the forum?

Well, I didn't want to be rude but when I saw you resurface again...

WillRikersExtraNipple · 12/07/2017 15:14

Can you really not understand that an accent can pronounce letters differently depending on their placement in a word?

But they AREN'T differently placed in the word at all!

I asked a simple question, none of the answers given actually answered it at all. Just say "we just do" then?

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 12/07/2017 15:19

You didn't ask a simple question, you made a point and made a snippy comment about how it couldn't be any clearer.
