Not always Molly. Lots of wc northerners say plarster. Always found it a bit odd myself.
We say bath, path, glass etc short A.

Dibbles1967 · 10/07/2017 04:12

Frarnsis

ScarletSienna · 10/07/2017 21:36

Frahnses

I'd spell it this way too to ensure it would be pronounced such Grin

ConstanceCraving · 11/07/2017 07:49

Those who say Frarnces - do you say Sarm, Brard, Carthy?

SoupDragon · 11/07/2017 07:54

How do you say tear and tear?

Shock news! In English, words that look the same aren't always pronounced the same! Shock

AgentCooper · 11/07/2017 07:56

With a short A - Glaswegian here. If you wanted it said with the long A up here you'd probably have to call her Fraunces...

ConstanceCraving · 11/07/2017 08:04

Because they have different meanings SoupDragon.

SoupDragon · 11/07/2017 08:08

As do Sam and Francis.

ConstanceCraving · 11/07/2017 08:11

Nope.

SoupDragon · 11/07/2017 08:18

Ah. You're just being deliberately obtuse for the "fun" of it.

ConstanceCraving · 11/07/2017 08:20

No!

Of course not. Are you?

SoupDragon · 11/07/2017 08:26

Well, you seem to think that Sam and Francis mean the same and should be pronounced the same and you really can't understand the concept of accents so yes, I'd say you are being deliberately obtuse.

BertrandRussell · 11/07/2017 08:39

Some people only appear to have met the English language yesterday............

Welcome. It's fun, but you're in for a bumpy ride!

ConstanceCraving · 11/07/2017 08:46

Sam and Francis are different names but both have a short a. That is why I asked if you pronounce Sam as Sarm. Which obviously you don't?

flowery · 11/07/2017 08:46

"Those who say Frarnces - do you say Sarm, Brard, Carthy?"

No of course not. As you well know. Don't say "math(s)" the same as "bath" either. Or "can" and the three letters at the beginning of "can't".

Surely you've heard people with a southern English accent before?!

flowery · 11/07/2017 08:51

Or "mass" the same as "grass"

Ontopofthesunset · 11/07/2017 08:52

No, because the 'e' at the end of the consonant cluster 'nc' is what changes the reading of the 'a' from a short to long vowel. France is the same as dance, stance, enhance, trance, glance - in SE accents they all have a long vowel. It is not Fran- sis, it is France -is.

ConstanceCraving · 11/07/2017 08:53

Yes indeed flowery. So why pronounce Francis with a long a but not Sam?

flowery · 11/07/2017 08:54

"Sam and Francis are different names but both have a short a."

In your accent they might. But there are plenty of accents where Francis has a long a. Open your mind and accept that people speak differently and are not wrong because they don't speak like you!

flowery · 11/07/2017 08:55

"So why pronounce Francis with a long a but not Sam?"

Because in my accent that is how it is pronounced! Same as bath has a long a, and grass, but mass and math do not!

StarHeartDiamond · 11/07/2017 08:55

FrANses

Not FrARN ses

Probably an accent thing but I've never heard FRARN ses with such an emphasis on ARN even though lived in London & south

flowery · 11/07/2017 08:56

You're on a hiding to nothing trying to argue that pronunciation in English should be logical and consistent. It just isn't!

ConstanceCraving · 11/07/2017 08:57

But why don't you use the long a in Sam if you use it in Francis with a southern accent?

flowery · 11/07/2017 08:57

I don't know! I didn't invent the SE accent. That's just the way it is!
