I pronounce Frances and Francis exactly the same - Frahn-sis.

SellFridges · 09/07/2017 08:44

Out of interest, do those pronouncing it Frarn-ces ask promounce the shortened version Frarn? Or switch to Fran?

Trills · 09/07/2017 08:49

Frances with a long A, Fran with a short A.

Lots of names change sound when you shorted them.

Katherine and Kate have different vowels
Charlotte and Charlie switch from a Sh to a Ch
Rebecca and Elizabeth change first letter when you shorten them.

MiniMaxi · 09/07/2017 08:53

Same way as you - I'm from London

JessicaBearx · 09/07/2017 08:53

i would say Fran as it looks though not Frarn how strange!

There is no right or wrong way here, but if you want people to say it only your way, they're just not going to unless they're from the south of England (roughly speaking).

cece · 09/07/2017 08:55

Fran-ces. I work with one.
I had no idea there was an alternative pronounciation.
South East here.

My FIL was Francis and it was said Fran-cis.

Lucked · 09/07/2017 09:02

Fran -ces I am Scottish.

I you have rhotic r's then you don't have the funny r you are inserting (not really an r) in your dialect.

ILoveMyMonkey · 09/07/2017 09:07

South East
Friend called Frances, everyone says Frarn-ses.
It's never shortened.

rizlett · 09/07/2017 09:12

How about just using Fran?

Even a southerner like me would say Fran and not FraRn in that case.

TheHiphopopotamus · 09/07/2017 09:13

Out of interest, do those pronouncing it Frarn-ces ask promounce the shortened version Frarn? Or switch to Fran?

Don't know why, but that made me laugh. Saying 'Frarn' seems a bit Hyacinth (not that I've ever heard anyone pronounce it like that).

Violetcharlotte · 09/07/2017 09:15

Frarn sis

SloeGinRocks · 09/07/2017 09:16

Frarrn sis.

elephantpig · 09/07/2017 09:24

Frarnces but when shortened it becomes Fran

ConstanceCraving · 09/07/2017 09:31

Today 09:24 elephantpig

Frarnces but when shortened it becomes Fran

Huh. That really doesn't make any sense. Surely it's one on the other.

It's Fran-ces to me.

Adelie0404 · 09/07/2017 09:34

Well I get called all sort of things with all sort is pronunciations. Am a southerner.
Fran, Frarn, Franny, Frarnces, Fran-ces, Francine (?). Mostly as I am an adult, Frarnces. I don't mind. What I don't like is that people often spell it Francis. Idiots!

SoupDragon · 09/07/2017 09:34

Frarnsis and fran. Makes perfect sense.

I think the pronunciation is mostly to so with accent though. Like barth and bath and darnce and dance

ConstanceCraving · 09/07/2017 09:40

But if you pronounced it Frarnces you'd pronounce the shortened version Frarn not Fran. Surely?

ShatnersBassoon · 09/07/2017 09:45

Words don't really work like that. Nobody says hart for hat or cart for cat. You don't need to choose one way of saying 'a' and stick with it no matter what Grin

Heratnumber7 · 09/07/2017 10:07

I prounounce my name Fran sess

HTH

Trills · 09/07/2017 10:14

But if you pronounced it Frarnces you'd pronounce the shortened version Frarn not Fran. Surely?

Nope.

As I said above, lots of names change their sounds when shortened.

ConstanceCraving · 09/07/2017 10:25

What sort of names Trills?

IveGotBillsTheyreMultiplying · 09/07/2017 10:33

It's amazing the variety of answers.

I'm Scottish so Fran (like man) sis (like sister). With a rolled R.

I knew people said baaath (bath) but do you say baaaahrth down South?

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 09/07/2017 10:35

Fr-ahn- siss

TartanDMs · 09/07/2017 10:36
