See? Doesn't make any sense at all.

Confused

Not sure why you're having such difficulty understanding. So what if the A in Catherine is pronounced differently to the A in Frances. There are many irregularities in all accents. What do you want? For people with SE accents to flatten the a in Frances just to please you? And then? Flatten the A when referring to the country of France for added consistency?

WillRikersExtraNipple · 09/07/2017 20:34

Obviously its too difficult a question. Never mind!

WaitrosePigeon · 09/07/2017 20:35

Frarn Sis

squoosh · 09/07/2017 20:35

Give your head a little wobble.

WillRikersExtraNipple · 09/07/2017 20:36

I prefer to pronounce that wibble acksherly.

flowery · 09/07/2017 20:37

"they DO change their accent for Catherine and Angela, they use the short a even though that is not how they would say anything else."

Confused Can pan man Dan cat pat mat sat tap map lap...

All have a short A.

mathanxiety · 09/07/2017 20:53

Of course it makes no sense. English is a very irregular language.

I give you 'Elastoplast'.

(I guarantee the way I would pronounce Catherine and Angela would not sound the same as it would in a SE England accent even with the short As..)

SoupDragon · 09/07/2017 21:02

Hate it when southerners add an R to words that don't have an R

Hate it when Northerners try to claim their accent is the only correct way to pronounce words.

Bananamama1213 · 09/07/2017 21:03

Husbands middle name is Francis.
We pronounce it "frarn-siss"

(But we just tell people that he doesn't have one as he hates it haha)

SoupDragon · 09/07/2017 21:06

People are saying that in their accent they use a long a so barth, parth, carstle, Frarnces. BUT, they DO change their accent for Catherine and Angela, they use the short a even though that is not how they would say anything else.

How do you pronounce Angela?
How do you pronounce Angel?

BeyondDrinksAndKnowsThings · 09/07/2017 21:06

Hate it when southerners and northerners forget about the other three countries in the UK...
Wink

BeyondDrinksAndKnowsThings · 09/07/2017 21:07

I say Barth and parth
Still fran-sis though Grin

SoupDragon · 09/07/2017 21:09

How about tear and tear?
Were and werewolf?
Kilo and kilometre?

sweetbabboo · 09/07/2017 21:09

FRAN-ciss

Lindorballs · 09/07/2017 21:22

Poor OP. If you were ever thinking of using this name I doubt you are now 🤣
It's a shame. It's a good name. I've never found it an issue. I don't ever correct people whichever way they pronounce it. I've never heard anyway pronounce the ending anything other than a "siss" sound though but even if I did I probably wouldn't correct them. The main bugbear for me is the spelling confusion.

InvisableLobstee · 09/07/2017 21:39

Also dont shorten it to Fanny or as i would pronounce it Fahnny.

PeterReidFaePeterheid · 09/07/2017 21:41

Fran ciss. Can't think of another way to say it.

And definitely not with a second R!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 09/07/2017 22:02

So they DO change their accent to say Catherine and not Cartherine
No they don't as Catherine is always pronounced with a short A regardless of your accent.

SoupDragon · 09/07/2017 22:11

And definitely not with a second R!

It's an ah sound which, if you don't roll your Rs, sounds just like R in many accents.

lorelairoryemily · 09/07/2017 22:21

Where on earth are you getting the second R from?! That's bizzare!!

SoupDragon · 09/07/2017 22:35

That's bizzare!!

No, it's a different accent.

fannydaggerz · 09/07/2017 22:50

Scottish accent. Fran -sess

MollyHuaCha · 09/07/2017 23:01

Frances is one of those names like Alexander, Clara and Sandra whereby the pronunciation of 'a' will change according to region. As a guide, it will be the same as the way people pronounce bath, last, plaster, pass.

Gwenhwyfar · 09/07/2017 23:07

"Good point, different depending on sex!
Frances (girl) - FRAN-sez
Francis (boy) - FrARN-sis"

The spelling depends on the sex, but the pronunciation is the same for both surely - 'sis' at the end and the first syllable either Fran or Frahn depending on whether you normally have a long or short 'a'.

Buffal0buttcheeks · 09/07/2017 23:18

Fraaan-sus
Various shorter versions acceptable, but never Fanny
