This isn't a hate thread! I've been told that I like boring names Grin

OP posts:

I got to page 3 without my dss being mentioned . Then they were all mentioned by one poster. Im paranoid she knows me and hates me as no one else has mentioned those names!!

Nodowntime · 25/06/2017 00:11

Claire. The female equivalent of Lee

Not really, Lee was never as common and overused as Clare/Claire, but at the same time Claire sounds pretty(ask a child, or a foreigner, basically somebody not jaded), and Lee doesn't!
Sue is more like Lee.

Nodowntime · 25/06/2017 00:17

Barry. BARRY!!!! Who looks at their precious newborn & calls it Barry!!!!

This is crazy, I was just saying exactly that to family the other day :) I actually decided it was always a shortened version of something grander, like Bartholomew maybe?

However, I wouldn't call Barry a BORING name. Boring name shouldn't evoke any dramatic emotions, it should just feel 'meh'

HateSummer · 25/06/2017 00:31

Alan and Paul.

LottieandMia · 25/06/2017 00:34

Lol. Almost everyone I knows name is on here (including me - sob) but dd1 and dd2 haven't been mentioned yet (dd3 is a popular name. I was going to call her something unusual but she didn't suit the name)

I think you need to bear this in mind. Sometimes you come up with a quirky, unusual name and the child is born and it doesn't suit them. Hence why dd3 has a 'boring' name.

rollonthesummer · 25/06/2017 00:39

Sarah, Jane, Anne, Ann, Grace, Jo, Sue, Jan, Lynn

John, Joe, Paul, Jack.

Names with one syllable generally!

Zoflorabore · 25/06/2017 00:46

Oh dear! Mine was on the first post, dd's has featured once and poor ds's is on a lot.

My Oliver was born in 2003 when it was very unusual, we've never met another one his age or around his age, I was ahead of the times Grin

Boring to me is anything with a "may" at the end. Heard a " Denver may " recently, sounds awful.
Someone I know has a 2 year old Evie and was saying she is so pleased her name is so unusual, think she needs to get out more...

Pretty much all of my family, including my in laws have been mentioned now. I was going to say DD1 has escaped a boring name but she made it onto page 4.
At least we are all boring and therefore clearly well suited.

Unadon · 25/06/2017 02:46

Jane
John
Jack
Jill

QuimReaper · 25/06/2017 03:14

Claire really is the most aggressively boring name in the world.

Ella and Beth and Ruth are along the same lines. Names with no "sound" to them, just flump names.

5LiveSportsExtra · 25/06/2017 03:23

I work with a Helen. We were talking about names once and she said even though her name was supposed to be a common one she rarely came across other Helens. I find Jennifer a bit depressing, not sure why.

Both my DCs names have made the list. I never understood why Isla seemed to suddenly become popular. I grew up in Scotland and the only Isla I knew was Isla St Claire (that's dullness bingo according to this thread Smile) but about 10 years ago it started appearing everywhere and I don't know what the trigger was.

Ginandplatonic · 25/06/2017 03:27

Depends what you mean by boring. The diversity of answers on this thread show that not everyone means the same thing. People are variously nominating traditional names, currently popular names, popular in the 70s/80s names, short names....

WetsTheFinger · 25/06/2017 03:42

Clare

KoalaDownUnder · 25/06/2017 03:59

Claire really is the most aggressively boring name in the world.

That's how I feel about Sarah. I've always thought it's like calling your baby 'Girl'.

Ditto Emma.

cleanasawhistle · 25/06/2017 04:13

Judith, Ruth, Janice, Kirsten, Stephanie, Pamela

Hugh, James, David, Peter, Robert, Nicholas

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 25/06/2017 04:17

Well mine & DH's names seem to be the most mentioned on here so far Grin.

DS1 & DS2 also get a mention - just DD to go.

Names I find "boring" include;

Matthew
James
Robert
Paul
Scott
Kyle

Olivia
Grace
Jessica (10 a penny here)
Laura
Anything hyphenated with -May or -Rose.

Back in my youth I would have said Sarah, Claire, Karen, Tracey, Lee, Sean & Dean.

LottieandMia · 25/06/2017 04:26

Names that I think are actually dull

Emma, Ruth, Lucy, Louise, Rachel, Linda, Katie, Vicky, Lianne, Rebecca, Michelle, Nicola, Stacy.

I don't think names like Lily Mae are dull but they are just over used I guess.

PutThatPomBearBack · 25/06/2017 04:30

Emma
Emily
Amy
Amelia
Abigail
Louise
Nikki
Lucy
Sarah
Claire
Grace
Georgia
George
Ben
John
James
Carl
Jack

Nodowntime · 25/06/2017 10:26

More and more beautiful names started appearing on the thread Wink
But I love classical/biblical/Shakespearian names, which lots of people find sounding good, but also they become a safe choice, so become overused=boring.

Though some names now mentioned a few times haven't had a revival yet, and the older generation representatives have mostly died off, so they are actually rare. (Like Ruth- the only RL ones I'm aware of are long dead. Peter/John are going that way too!Shock)

QuimReaper · 25/06/2017 11:38

NoDown I was at school with a Ruth whom to this day I despise, might have coloured my feelings Grin We're in our twenties. I did meet a little Ruth a few years ago though, the result of an unplanned teenage pregnancy. Found that very surprising.

QuimReaper · 25/06/2017 11:39

Koala I'd have to agree there - quite similar names in a way.

SparkleDownUnder · 25/06/2017 12:06

Oh Dear.

I have a 7 year old Peter. He's lovely. :)

Actually, we tend to get only approving noises about the name Peter as it is SO unusual nowadays. (Maybe people are being polite though!).

No matter- we are happy and content with his name. (He is never EVER Pete though. - except for a cousin who calls him 'Pirate Pete' just to make me laugh).

WaitrosePigeon · 25/06/2017 12:52

Peter is a super cute name Smile

TheCraicDealer · 25/06/2017 13:03

My first and middle name are in the first reply to this thread- what an achievement Grin

I think Jonathan is pretty much the beigeist name ever, but love John which has been mentioned a few times. I could imagine a wee toddler called John running about the place.
