I like strong punchy girls' names.

So:

Rosa
Nina
Nancy
Aphra
Frieda
Margaret

I think I like Margaret the best now that you've explained the personal connection! I like the names Nina and Rosa too.

If you'd like some more inspiration, these are some other names I like that are inspired by strong women:

Maya (Angelou)
Emmy (Noesser)
Ada (Lovelace)
Jocelyn (Bell Burnell)
Simone (de Beauvoir, Weil)
Hannah (Arendt)

I'm thankful sirens no longer go neeee-nah. That old UK two tone siren has mainly been replaced with the US wail style siren. kids now in primary schools hear that instead so I doubt it would be an issue for a little Nina.

I just asked my four year to make a siren sound and it was definitely more of a wail sound that he made.

I just did the same with my 2.5yo, who said "nee-naw-nee-naw"! It wouldn't put me off the name, if I liked it though. It's hardly the worst association.

Astrid (Ass- turd), Benedict (bendy dick) and Bella (bellend) are potentially worse, but people still have those names without a problem.

Fwiw Margaret is my favourite. I like Maggie and Peggy as nns.

Rosa!

BendydickCuminsnatch · 08/06/2017 16:19

Rosa by far!

I also think Nora/h is an amazing and strong and punchy name, but can't think of a famous one for you to use as a namesake (other than Jones obviously).

n0ne · 08/06/2017 16:29

Good list! I like Frieda best a we're considering this name too Grin

Aphra is lovely, and unusual.

Nancy is awesome. I think of The Craft (fave movie of my teens)

ninnypoo · 08/06/2017 19:57

Frieda

MummysMaison · 08/06/2017 20:04

Rosa and Nancy x

celtiethree · 08/06/2017 21:15

I'd never describe Nina, Nancy or Rosa as strong and puncy! Rather wet to be honest. Frieda is strong and punchy, the only one that I like.

Zoflorabore · 08/06/2017 21:17

None sorry! I do like Rose instead of Rosa.
Not a criticism op we obviously have very different tastes. I just can't imagine a little baby with any of those names.

Amethistle · 08/06/2017 21:20

Nina Smile would love to meet a girl with this name.

purplecoathanger · 08/06/2017 21:24

Rosa

iamdazedandconfused · 08/06/2017 21:32

Nina, then Nancy.

But they are all nice. I would go for Nina Margaret to honour your fabulous grandmother.
