I like strong punchy girls' names.

So:

Rosa
Nina
Nancy
Aphra
Frieda
Margaret

Nina or Frieda... but I prefer the spelling Frida.

Buntysoven · 08/06/2017 01:07

Fantastic list...my favourites are Nancy Frieda and Aphra

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 08/06/2017 09:03

Frieda of Aphra.

I love aphra.
Wouldn't describe some of these as strong or punchy though, everyone will see them differently.

V true Ohyes. What do you think is strong and punchy.

I think for me that I associate these names with strong and punchy women like Nina Simone, Rosa Parkes, Frieda Kahlo, Aphra Behn, Nancy Drew (ha ha!)... and oddly my grandmother who was a female surgeon called Margaret.

Nancy

voobylooby · 08/06/2017 11:49

Nancy first, Rosa second :)

blahthisistoohard · 08/06/2017 12:17

Surprised at all the positivity for Nina here, I was teased no end for having that as a name growing up and as a result can't stand it! I also wouldn't describe it as 'punchy'.

Nancy is also really not strong and punchy at all, conversely it actually sounds very flouncy, it is a nice name though!

HangingRock · 08/06/2017 12:37

What were the people who were teasing saying about the name?

blahthisistoohard · 08/06/2017 12:48

@HangingRock 'neeeenahneeeenahneeeenahneeeenah' (as in a siren!), yes it was primary school but I've never forgotten it!

user1473602935 · 08/06/2017 12:52

Nina

Miz10 · 08/06/2017 13:32

Rosa

HangingRock · 08/06/2017 13:44

Yes that would have been irritating.

Rosa is my favourite by miles
Nina next

Not too fussed on Margaret as it seems quite old fashioned IMO

24hoursinER · 08/06/2017 13:58

I'm thankful sirens no longer go neeee-nah. That old UK two tone siren has mainly been replaced with the US wail style siren. kids now in primary schools hear that instead so I doubt it would be an issue for a little Nina.

I just asked my four year to make a siren sound and it was definitely more of a wail sound that he made.
