Aubrey or Avery?

We don't like Audrey.

Which do you prefer? Aubrey or Avery?

Can people please not be extremely negative? I can deal with some, but I'm extremely stressed. She needs to be registered soon and I'd really like it to be a name we like without being put off.

Not to be rude Gert but 1. please read my OP! 2. Aubrey is slowly becoming a girls name and I really do believe it will end up being like Darcy, Courtney, etc.

I like Aubrey, and I have definitely heard it as a girls name, I just can't remember where, it was on a tv show. but Avery is equally as nice, it's a tough choice.

I like Aubrey and I'm sure that it's seen as a girls name now, the little girl who plays Lilly on Modern Family is Aubrey.

I thought Avery was a boy's name too? The only one I've ever heard of is Avery Brooks (Captain Sisko in Deep Space Nine). But google tells me it's becoming more popular as a girls' name - yes, why not, its's nice. Aubrey for a girl still sounds to me like it should have been Audrey.

They are both boys names, but if you want to give a girl a boys name that's your prerogative.

Of the two I'd pick Avery.

Sunshine I thought it sounded like a bird cage too, but wasn't entirely sure so didn't mention it in my previous post.

80 girls were given the name and 41 boys so it's definitely not going to be an issue imho.

Aubrey is used as a girls' name in the USA, but I've never heard it used her for girls. The only male of that name was an old man who lived near us!

Aubrey is a bit like Leslie (not Lesley) or Ashley - traditionally a boy's name but an American trend for using it as a girl's name in that country - not sure that trend has completely made it here although perhaps more recently...

I prefer Avery though, have a friend whose new baby is called that.

I think Avery is uncommon enough here that bar a few trekkies most people won't think of it as a particularly gendered name either way. It also has the option of shortening to Ava if she wanted.

As mentioned above, I personally don't like that Aubrey is being used for girls - BUT I think both Avery and Aubrey are generally accepted as unisex these days and I don't see any reason why you can't use them for a girl. In fact, in real life (outside MN), Aubrey is currently more recognisable as a girls name (which I why we won't be using it for our boy ).

You could try flipping a coin. Heads Aubrey, Tails Avery. I'm not suggesting you actually use it to decide, but when it lands, I bet you'll have a gut feeling that is either pleased or disappointed and make you realise that you actually DO have a preference towards one.

I love 'A' names. Prefer Aubrey to Avery.
Also love Addison, Adeline and Aurora.

Love Aubrey for a boy, so probably Avery.

Everly has a similar sound, and I've only ever seen that as a girls name. Also love A name - Adelaide is my current favourite.
