Aubrey or Avery?

We don't like Audrey.

Which do you prefer? Aubrey or Avery?

Can people please not be extremely negative? I can deal with some, but I'm extremely stressed. She needs to be registered soon and I'd really like it to be a name we like without being put off.

I always thought Aubrey was a boy-only name, but a friend's niece has been called this and I've got used to it now. It's cool and sweet all-in-one. Have started noticing Americans using this as a female name now too.

Think I prefer it to Avery on balance, though that's nice too.

plutohasfeelingstoo · 02/05/2017 13:03

Avery! I like it

Laura2507 · 02/05/2017 21:27

I love Aubrey for a girl. It's on my list. Much prefer it to Avery x

ScarletSienna · 03/05/2017 17:20

I was surprised to read 'she' in your lay sentence as I only know them as boy names. I really dislike boy names given to girls but Avery sounds slightly more feminine maybe so that. Is it definitely one of those two names? Good luck and congrats

Aubrey makes me think of a boy with long ringlets and velvet knickerbockers - a la Little Lord Fauntleroy.

I do like Avery, and would pronounce it Ay-ver-ee, with the stress on the first syllable.

Floellabella · 04/05/2017 15:47

I think Avery (ay-ver-ee) is nicer and less recognisable as a boys name.

Or how about Amory/Amery? Congratulations on your new baby x

OvO · 04/05/2017 15:52

Love Aubrey.

Makes me think of Aubrey Plaza who is funny as hell in Parks and Recs.

GinAndOnIt · 04/05/2017 15:57

Avery is lovely. And shortened to Ava is lovely too. It's unusual but still being easy to spell and say. It's really nice.

I can't say Aubrey without putting on an American accent, but that may be because I have an American cousin called Aubrianna!

Playdoughinthecarpet · 04/05/2017 15:59

Avery, definitely.

LapinR0se · 07/05/2017 06:53

Ava?

diodati · 07/05/2017 06:58

I was going to call my DS Auberon until my dad talked me out of it. By the way.

user1473602935 · 07/05/2017 07:04

Both lovely but Avery if I had to chose. Congratulations!!

Phillipa12 · 07/05/2017 07:08

I love Aubrey, it is predominantly a boys name in this country but its becoming popular as a girls name in America. (my eldest son is called Aubrey)

CatCircle · 07/05/2017 07:22

I'd thought these names tended be slanted more gendered in the US by using a gendered spelling, a bit like people in UK might spell Robin/Robyn for b/g.
(That is; if you want to gender the name- you might positively want gender ambiguity or an expectation of a boy via the spelling))
So Aubree or Averie for a girl, Aubrey or Avery for a boy.
I like Amory for a boy or Amerie for a girl fwiw.
I'd expect Aubrey to be a boy if I read it on a CV or class list. It has a beautiful sound as a name though.

Dolwar · 12/05/2017 23:42

Aubrey is a boys name
Why would you want to saddle your baby with a name that everyone aimed belonged to the other sex?

I thought they were both boy's names until you mentioned Audrey.

29Palms · 13/05/2017 19:16

Aubrey has always been a man's name, and I will always hear it as a man's name.

There are hundreds if not thousands of names, it beats me why people feel the need to do this.

With Aubery I think of Aubery Burl (he's an archeologist!)! So for me it's too masculine.

Dare I say it (based on the Murdo thread!), Avery reminds me of the bird cage as it's too similar (not the same before anyone jumps in that band wagon!) to Aviary unfortunately. But if I had to choose I'd go for Avery but call her Ava because I love that name!

Nicky2468 · 14/05/2017 05:14

'On that band wagon' that should say!!

idontknow6 · 14/05/2017 09:11

i like Aubrey, there is a female actress Aubrey Plaza i think it's more than acceptable to use as a girls name! so if u like it then use itSmile

29Palms · 14/05/2017 10:49

Aubrey Plaza? Sounds like an American shopping centre.

user1483387154 · 14/05/2017 10:51

I have only ever known Aubrey as a boys name.
I think Avery is nice

MangosteenSoda · 14/05/2017 11:04

It really sucks that so many boys' names get co-opted as girls' names because then they always stop being used for boys.

Of the two, for a girl, I'd go for Avery (3 syllables).
