Samuel - how is it pronounced?

We are considering the name Samuel, but we seem to disagree on the pronunciation. One of us thinks that it's Sam-u-el and the other thinks it's Sam-uel...

Definitely Sam-yule. Really surprised that anyone would pronounce it differently!

MaisyPops · 23/04/2017 19:25

Sam-you-well

But quickly together.

TipBoov · 23/04/2017 20:19

3 syllables - Sam you ull

WallisFrizz · 23/04/2017 20:21

Sam-yul.

BoobleMcB · 23/04/2017 20:21

Sam-you-el

YouBloodyWhat · 23/04/2017 20:35

Two syllables for me.

Although all the Samuels that I've ever met have gone by just one syllable anyway!

SuperBeagle · 23/04/2017 21:39

Sam-yule

Two syllables.

mathanxiety · 23/04/2017 22:52

Sam-yool, 2 syllables.

Dixiestamp · 24/04/2017 07:31

3 syllables here (although the then u-el at the end is more or a diphthong vowel, so does sound a bit like it's one syllable, I guess).

Footle · 24/04/2017 10:27

Are you into hobbits? The delightful Sam Gamgee's full name is Samwell.

Queensparkles · 24/04/2017 11:27

Might just be my accent but I'd pronounce it Sam-yul (2 syllables) although it is technically supposed to be 3

Purpledaffodils · 24/04/2017 16:42

Sam-yul. Didn't realise it could be pronounced differently.

Sample1936 · 24/04/2017 16:47

Sam well

Sample1936 · 24/04/2017 16:48

Sam o well

Ohyesiam · 24/04/2017 16:58

2 syllables, or maybe 2.5, as you can slightly pronounce the e, but run it into the l.

EmmaWoodlouse · 24/04/2017 22:10

I say Sam-you-ul when I'm concentrating but probably more like Sam-y'll when I'm talking fast, although as it happens I rarely have to say that name at the moment. We know a rather pompous man who doesn't like his children's names being shortened - one of them is a Samuel, and when my DC are talking about him they tend to exaggerate the not-shortenedness by referring to him as SamuELLE! But I don't think anyone would ever normally pronounce it that way Wink

GreatFuckability · 25/04/2017 00:27

I say Sam-you-ul. but I'm welsh. so its an accent thing.

GreatFuckability · 25/04/2017 00:28

Footle

SamWISE Gamgee.
However, there is a SamWELL Tarly in Game of Thrones!

GF, thank you. Must check sources before posting foot into mouth.
