Samuel - how is it pronounced?

We are considering the name Samuel, but we seem to disagree on the pronunciation. One of us thinks that it's Sam-u-el and the other thinks it's Sam-uel...

Three syllables here, sam-u-el, although there's not much difference between pronouncing it with two or three really, not in sound.

Just for fun, Samuel in different accents from around the world.

I'd use three syllables but I think that there's not too much difference in how Samuel is said in most English accents really. The three syllable approach is just a bit more enunciated.

I say Sam-you-ul when I'm concentrating but probably more like Sam-y'll when I'm talking fast, although as it happens I rarely have to say that name at the moment. We know a rather pompous man who doesn't like his children's names being shortened - one of them is a Samuel, and when my DC are talking about him they tend to exaggerate the not-shortenedness by referring to him as SamuELLE! But I don't think anyone would ever normally pronounce it that way Wink

2 syllables, or maybe 2.5, as you can slightly pronounce the e, but run it into the l.

Sam-yul. Didn't realise it could be pronounced differently.

Might just be my accent but I'd pronounce it Sam-yul (2 syllables) although it is technically supposed to be 3

Are you into hobbits? The delightful Sam Gamgee's full name is Samwell.

3 syllables here (although the then u-el at the end is more or a diphthong vowel, so does sound a bit like it's one syllable, I guess).

Two syllables.

Two syllables for me.

Although all the Samuels that I've ever met have gone by just one syllable anyway!
