How do you pronounce Violet?

I can't pronounce it Vi-o-let without sounding like I'm from Cornwall?

I say it as Vi-let (2 syllables) and wondered if that was an acceptable pronunciation?

Vy-let

Two syllables here in Australia.

Mumzypopz · 22/04/2017 21:14

Vy o let.....It has an o. Why would you not pronounce it?

Squidgling · 22/04/2017 21:17

I say vy-let, but the last syllable is not pronounced like the word let, more of a uh than eh sound if that makes sense? I struggle to write things phonetically.

DramaInPyjamas · 22/04/2017 21:19

Vy - ah - lit

grasspigeons · 22/04/2017 21:19

Vylet

LostMyDotBrain · 22/04/2017 21:20

Vy-lut. I font pronounce 'violent' with three syllables either.

RoccoW14 · 22/04/2017 21:38

I say: Vee-oh-le.. but I'm also Mrs Bucket (pronounced: boo-kay).

AndNowItIsSeven · 22/04/2017 21:39

Vi let

EllaHen · 22/04/2017 21:41

Same as you, Vi-let.

However, when I read it I pronounce all three syllables. Mind you I read Siobhan as Si-oh-ban when I'm reading. Wink

Haudyerwheesht · 22/04/2017 21:43

Vi-lit

MadameCholetsDirtySecret · 22/04/2017 21:45

Vio lut.

ShatnersBassoon · 22/04/2017 21:46

Three syllables. I say violent with three syllables too. I'm nothing like West Country Grin

DramaAlpaca · 22/04/2017 21:46

I pronounce it with three syllables, but the middle one is hardly there at all.

ShatnersBassoon · 22/04/2017 21:48

Yes, same here. The 'o' is separate from the 'i' but sort of runs into the 'let'.

wickedgamestoplay · 22/04/2017 21:48

Vi let

Cineraria · 22/04/2017 21:50

I think that it's having too much of a y sound on the end of the Vi that makes it sound a bit west country. I do three syllables but don't say Vi as Vahy if that makes sense, more like Vah-uh-lt.

Imstickingwiththisone · 22/04/2017 21:50

I say Vi-let but the o in Vi-o-let is really subtle so i don't think it's a big deal

Alwayshungryforcrisps · 22/04/2017 21:50

Vy-er-let from Manchester

Fauchelevent · 22/04/2017 21:52

Like cineraria - vah-ah-let

AmysTiara · 22/04/2017 21:53

Vi let

moonlightmile · 22/04/2017 21:53

I pronounce it Vy-let

RoganJosh · 22/04/2017 21:54

Vie lut - I think because the two I've known have been pronounced that way.

Sallylondon · 22/04/2017 21:56

It's Vi-o-let. Same as vi-o-lin.
Violin isn't vi-lin, so why should Violet be Vi-let?

TurtleBay20 · 22/04/2017 21:57

But I do say Vi-lin...

Vy-uh-let

Not very refined.
