Would you assume it's short for Maxwell or Maximilian?

DH and I both love 'Max' but agree it needs to be a bit longer on the birth certificate - but we can't decide whether it should be Maxwell or Maximilian and I'm curious to hear the MN consensus...

I would assume it's short for Maxwell, however I think Maximilian is the nicer name.

I wouldn't assume anything, but the only Max I know if short for Maximilian.

I'd assume Max was short for Maximilian. It would never occur to me it could be Maxwell - I didn't know that was a first name.

I would assume he was a Maximilian and Max was his nickname.

I think Maxwell is very American - aka Maxwell Caulfield, US actor who used to be in Dynasty.
