When you hear the name Max...

Would you assume it's short for Maxwell or Maximilian?

DH and I both love 'Max' but agree it needs to be a bit longer on the birth certificate - but we can't decide whether it should be Maxwell or Maximilian and I'm curious to hear the MN consensus...

I forgot: my parents only used my multi syllable name to tell me off!

Corialanusburt · 08/03/2017 19:55

Maximillian, Maxwell or Max equally.
There are lots of them about, certainly around the ages of 13 plus.

Ilovewillow · 08/03/2017 19:59

Maximilian but only because I knew one years go! Both are love as is just Max.

HemanOrSheRa · 08/03/2017 19:59

Fork Grin

1AnnoyingOrange · 08/03/2017 20:02

Maximilian.

PineappleExpress · 08/03/2017 20:15

I love the name Max. It's on my list.

I wouldn't necessarily assume it was short for anything, but would guess Maximilian, if it was. I prefer that to Maxwell

DartmoorDoughnut · 08/03/2017 20:38

Just to add my uncle was NEVER called Maxwell, he hated it Grin but he suited Max and liked it

CaipirinhasAllRound · 08/03/2017 22:10

There are 4 boys called Max in DS's group at nursery. No idea what their birth certificate names are, they all just get called 'Max surname'

Justwantcookies · 08/03/2017 22:14

Neither. I know a Maxim though and think that's a nice name

smilingsarahb · 08/03/2017 22:16

I would assume it was Max or Maximus, possibly Maximilian. ..not sure I would think of maxwell

CoffeeChocolateWine · 09/03/2017 13:06

My DS is Max...just Max. People do ask me what it is short for sometimes, but I don't like any of the longer versions. I'm not keen on Maxwell, and Maximilian or Maximus are pretty hard to pull off. Maxim is the best longer variation but I didn't even consider it at the time. He was always going to be known as Max so why use a longer name? He has a middle name and a short one-syllable surname and it sounds lovely to me!

watermelongun · 09/03/2017 13:59

I'd assume either just Max or Maxen (Macsen) but I'm in wales so Macs is quite common.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 09/03/2017 14:01

Interesting question! We do have a family relation (DH's family) called Max, and it's never occurred to me before this thread to wonder whether it's short for Maximilian, Maxwell or he's just a Max!
Will have to find out now.

I like all of them, but possibly Maxwell over Maximilian for spelling's sake. Maximus is good too.

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 09/03/2017 14:04

Max was always a top contender. I was wondering too about what it would be short for but now think I would go for Maxim.

NameChange30 · 09/03/2017 14:05

OP please come back and tell us what you decide!

And please choose Maxim because it's blatantly the best. Grin

Choccyhobnob · 09/03/2017 14:07

I know three Max's and they are all just Max. I don't really like any of the long versions so would find it hard to pick one. Maybe Maxwell if I had to.

thethoughtfox · 09/03/2017 14:16

I loved it but everyone told me it was a dog's name!

NameChange30 · 09/03/2017 14:19

I never understand why people do that (and there's always one - including on this thread!)

Some people use human names for their pets. So what.

ScarlettFreestone · 09/03/2017 14:25

These days I'd tend to assume they were just Max on bc (both the boys I know are)

I think Maxim is great though.

10Betty10 · 10/03/2017 18:22

Agree with others- Maxim is great

Grandmasterglitch · 10/03/2017 18:34

I have a Maxwell. I get really arsey if someone calls him Max. It's a different name IMO! Funnily enough two of the critisims on here are why we chose it (DHs beloved dog was called Max and our favorite sportsman has the surname Maxwell)

Kazzawazza69 · 10/03/2017 18:39

I wouldn't assume. I prefer Max to any of the longer options personally.

Booboostwo · 10/03/2017 19:46

I have a Maximilianos (Greek version of Maximilian - we are Greek not pretentious!), called Max and often Maxou (French influence) and Maxoulis by me (Greek bastardisation of Maxou). His name has evolved but Maximilianos is the only one we don't use!

BeBeatrix · 10/03/2017 19:49

I'd assume Maximillian and Maxim.

I much prefer longer official names, even if the shorter versions are used every day. It gives the child the option of using the full version should they want to in the future.

I've only heard Maxwell as a surname... and it doesn't have the best associations! Maximillian and Maxim are both nice names though.
