Is Kester awful?

My hormone-addled brain can't decide if I love it or hate it. We are stuck for boys names because the only one I really loved I gave to DS1, so if this baby is another boy I'm stumped. DH is a Christopher and I think Kester is a nice nod to that but I'm not sure if it's a bit 'out there'?

I'm not a fan. And it rhymes with fester, which isn't good.

Actually I have only ever heard it in a Fay Weldon book from the 1970s

I don't have strong feelings about it either way. I believe it's very unusual as a name though, if that bothers you.

Personally I don't like it, I immediately thought of jester; with the silly hat etc.

It doesn't quite fail my "Name or IKEA furniture" test, but sounds very un-name-like.

Behindthename says it's the Scottish form of Christopher... So that would be kind of odd given you already have a Christopher.

Tbh I've never heard the name before, but if I did know one, I'd enjoy making this home alone joke whenever he came over:

"Hey, I'm gonna give you to the count of ten, to get your ugly, yella, no-good kester off my property, before I pump your guts full of lead! 1, 2, 10!"

I only know it as the name of one of Joey Maynard's 185 kids. Not sure what I think of it really.

cheweduprope - it's DH who is Christopher so it's no odder than naming a son after his father really.

What about Hamish or Hector? They are the only other two on my list. We are Scottish and live in Scotland if that makes a difference.

I prefer both Hamish and Hector. Both quite posh Scottish names.

Hamish and Hector are both excellent names.

If you want to name your new baby after your husband (not my thing but horses for courses n'all that) what about Christopher known as Kit?

DS1 has quite a posh Scottish-sounding (although it's not) name, so I think Hamish and Hector would both 'go' ok.

Kester may be off the list then. I did have a feeling that the poor kid would spend his life faced with people going 'eh?' whenever he told them his name!
