Just that really!

I love it. I'm very into names ending with -th at the moment though (Edith, Heath, Meredith).

Ikeameatballs · 04/11/2016 23:31

I really like it. It was on my girls name list for ds iyswim along with:

Susannah
Harriet
Edith

Zoflorabore · 05/11/2016 01:10

Sorry but i think it's a horrible name.
Reminds me of an old lady, as does Emily.

Imagine seeing a lovely new baby in the pram and being told her name
Is Ruth, most people would feign politeness but be horrified.

My dc have normal names ( to me ) and I'm sure they would be hated by someone for whatever reason but this is MN and I'm being honest.

NotWeavingButDarning · 05/11/2016 01:12

Honestly? It's....fine.

But tremendously dull.

JammieDodgem · 05/11/2016 08:17

Names are so subjective aren't they? It's funny that people describe it as dull whereas I like it and see it as more interesting because it's less usual. The names that are ubiquitous at the moment and several in each class are the ones I find dull.

bookworm14 · 05/11/2016 08:31

Love it. It's my daughter's middle name and my grandmother's first name.

"Imagine seeing a lovely new baby in the pram and being told her name

What nonsense! As this thread clearly demonstrates, there are plenty of people who love the name.

I don't particularly like it but I wouldn't be horrified Grin

HarrietVane99 · 05/11/2016 12:54

'Imagine seeing a lovely new baby in the pram...'

But parents don't (or shouldn't) choose a name just for a new baby in a pram. That's a very, very short time in the context of a normal lifespan. A person's name is something she will carry with her throughout her life.

teenyrabbit · 05/11/2016 12:58

It makes me think of the unmumsy mum.. As in perfect Ruth.

BratFarrarsPony · 05/11/2016 12:58

I like it, although when I went to Israel, I met some girls called 'Ruth' who were known as (pron) 'Rootie' which really put me off the name.

mathanxiety · 05/11/2016 16:00

Ikea, I love your name list, including Ruth. I chose one name from it myself.

Conniedescending · 05/11/2016 16:02

Full

Conniedescending · 05/11/2016 16:02

Or Dull

birdybirdywoofwoof · 05/11/2016 17:09

Its my middle name. I've always suspected I'd be far nicer if it were my first!

theconstantinoplegardener · 05/11/2016 18:58

I don't much like it. I know several Ruths of various ages and they are all perfectly pleasant ladies but for some reason whenever I hear it , I expect its holder to be dull, overly serious and simultaneously ruthless. This makes no sense at all, I know. If ruthless means merciless, then Ruth should mean kind. But still, that is what I associate with the name.

dailymaillazyjournos · 06/11/2016 02:08

I know some nice Ruths but they're 60+ so I think of it as an older woman's name.I think it sounds a little short and harsh and as others have said, rather dull and worthy too.

I love a lot of old lady names like Mary, Clara, Martha but Ruth, not so much.

BuntyFigglesworthSpiffington · 06/11/2016 03:00

It's really awful.

Atenco · 06/11/2016 03:29

It's my favourite name and the name of my best friend at school. It also means "true friend"

swimmerforlife · 06/11/2016 03:40

It's inoffensive but dull and dated.

My Great Aunty is a Ruth and I have to say she is one of the most boring woman I have ever met.

JC23 · 06/11/2016 03:54

Hate it

BenLinusatemyhomework · 06/11/2016 14:21

Yeah but to be fair, I've known a fair few Sarah's, Clare's, Laura's and Jane's who were as dull as dishwater too. A name doesn't make a personality.

ReggieJones · 06/11/2016 15:19

Lovely, classic name, knew a little girl who was known as Ruthie for short which I thought was cute
