I really like it. One of the nicest people I know is called Ruth.

SpeckledyBanana · 02/11/2016 20:11

It's lovely. Doesn't it mean kindness, too?

DH vetoed it due to it being the name of an exGF. Dammit.

StarBears · 02/11/2016 20:11

Always feels very "worthy" to me. Churchy. Biblical. Earnest. Not the most dynamic name.

Wonderful. Classic, slightly unusual, not at all princessy. Great name.

TheScottishPlay · 02/11/2016 20:17

Love it. Wink

Getmoving · 02/11/2016 20:18

Don't like it. I know lots in their 50s and 60s and it's just old-fashioned.

JammieDodgem · 02/11/2016 20:20

Means kindness/compassion and somehow every Ruth I've known have been really lovely.

I think it's lovely and can work at all stages of life.

NameChange30 · 02/11/2016 21:51

It seems that Ruth is a very marmite name!

dontcallmelen · 02/11/2016 23:20

Sorry really dislike, only because the Ruth I knew was a nasty vindictive witch☹️

pieceofpurplesky · 02/11/2016 23:36

Lovely name. But then I also love Mary, Grace and Jenny

JudgeJudySheidlin · 03/11/2016 00:12

Ruth is the name of my much loved grandmother & my daughter's middle name. Naturally I feel it is a beautiful nameWink

mathanxiety · 03/11/2016 06:19

Love it. Ruthie is a sweet NN too.

BenLinusatemyhomework · 03/11/2016 10:18

Ruth means "compassionate friend" and "vision of beauty".

I'm a Ruth and although I hope I fit into the former, I definitely don't fit the latter description, mores the pity!

I do think my name is a bit boring but it isn't overly used and I think it's inoffensive. I like being called Ruthie though, even as a middle aged women.

Pronunciation wise, there is the Roof thing (I would actually get birthday cards as a child with Roof) and also it's an oddly difficult name for some non-English speakers to even hear never mind pronounce. I've had Rut, Rot, Roth, Roat... in fact one of DH's friend gave up and has called me Miriam for the last 11 years.

FuckThatToOneSide · 03/11/2016 11:15

I know some lovely women called Ruth, but I'm not terribly keen on the name. It's definitely inoffensive though and you don't hear it very often these days. That said, I know a guy who has a baby girl called Ruth. He's an epic twunt as it goes but I'm sure his baby is lovely Grin!

ElizaDontlittle · 03/11/2016 15:07

Love it. Used as a middle name in my family, beautiful name.

kittytom · 04/11/2016 20:00

I think it's sweet and classic although I did immediately think of the Friends Ross/Rachel baby name conversation Smile

Baboobaboo · 04/11/2016 20:49

Lovely and classic

Ankleswingers · 04/11/2016 20:54

Love it. One of my best friends is called Ruth and she is one of the nicest, sweetest and inoffensive people you could ever meet.

I've always felt that it sounded a bit plain and understated.

However, I know 3 Ruth's (all different ages). All are stunning, successful in what they do and lovely, positive people. So based on that, I would say it's a great name.

dementedma · 04/11/2016 21:00

I love it and it was top of my list for dd1 but dh didn't like it! Sad .

daisypond · 04/11/2016 21:06

I don't see it as being religious at all - no more than the huge number of names mentioned in the Bible/Old Testament. I think it's a lovely name - classic.

FormerlyCatherineDeB · 04/11/2016 21:07

I love it. Strong and classic.

DragonNoodleCake · 04/11/2016 21:10

My SILs name and she is totally awesome
