Tommy (not Thomas)

Opinions?

It's in the top 100 (I believe) so I don't agree with the comments of it not suiting adults, etc. as there will be quite a lot of Tommys who will become adults!

So, general thoughts?

Ok for a child until they are 8.

Tommy is fine as long as Thomas is on the BC.

Tommy as a name is dreadful.

I agree. Leave Thomas on the birth certificate just in case Tommy doesn't age well as a name. He'll probably end up as a Tom either way!

Personally, I'd give him Thomas and call him Tommy. I'm not a fan of diminuitives as given names.

Tommy, like Sammy or Sunny or Lizzie or many other examples just does not sound right as the only name. The full version should at least be used on the birth certificate.

I think people will assume it's Thomas anyway. I know 1 child who is Tommy but Thomas on bc a day and 2 adult Tommys. 1 is Thomas on bc the other is Tommy but is polish rather than British.

We won't be using Thomas.

I'm asking like everyone else does I'm asking about Tommy (not Thomas) like people ask about other names. I didn't say you couldn't like it! We aren't set on it either, that's why I'm asking. I was just saying I'm not using Thomas.

I don't like Tommy because all they can be is informal. Thomas is the formal of Tom or Tommy.
I have a Thomas, he is Tom and hates Tommy. I would like to call him Tommy and do sometimes, but he wouldn't choose it.
He is an adult now if that makes any difference.

Not for the birth certificate. Thomas is lovely, Tom is nice. Tommy? That's cute for a toddler... not a man or a teenager.

I have a nephew called Tommy. He is 18 now and he is always Tommy, never Tom and I don't think it has ever been an issue.

It suits him now as a young adult and I can't see it ever not suiting him.

I have a Thomas and he gets called Tom most of the time (he is 2) he occasionally gets Tommy but it's rare. Thomas is a classic name.

Like others have said - on the BC Tommy wouldn't look right for me but that's my opinion.

No, sorry. I don't like it at al as a full name. I don't like any names that have been traditionally used as nicknames as full first names.

I know siblings who are Maddie (short for Madison, though) and Tommy (full name). People do assume his name is Thomas, but it's no drama.

I don't really like Tommy personally. It sounds like a pet name to me (not as in the name of a pet, a 'pet name' for a human )! I've heard worse though, and he can always change it to Tom for everyday use when he's older if he decides it's a bit cutesy for him.

I do really like Tom as a full name btw and am actually not terribly keen on Thomas. I think Tom sounds nicer.

My lovely Dad, 78 years old, professional career all his working life (M.Eng, really senior government job for most of my life) has been Tommy since he was born.

I love it because I associate it with Dad who is one of the nicest people I have ever met - I appreciate him more every day.

So, a massive thumbs up from me.
