Have you used an alternative spelling for a cultural reason?

pennyunwise · 23/08/2016 21:04

Younique spelling for Benedict.?

piglover · 23/08/2016 21:04

Nice name - not so keen on that spelling.

pennyunwise · 23/08/2016 21:05

Unless you're Polish or something I suppose.

Chottie · 23/08/2016 21:05

Oh good lord no. Spelled normally it's quite nice though.

BubsAndMoo · 23/08/2016 21:07

Please don't do that to a child

(assuming it is a made up spelling and doesn't have a cultural explanation)

DownWithThisSortaThing · 23/08/2016 21:07

It's a nice name but the spelling's a bit try hard and your child would have a lifetime of having to spell his name out or correcting spelling which would get irritating as everyone will assume it's Benedict.

ThoraGruntwhistle · 23/08/2016 21:07

Ah, if it's an alternative spelling in Poland then fair enough. I thought you had made it up, sorry.

Madbengalmum · 23/08/2016 21:07

Hate the spelling, sorry

QuestionableMouse · 23/08/2016 21:08

I read it as bendy kit. I'm not sure that's what you're going for.

DownWithThisSortaThing · 23/08/2016 21:09

Oh sorry - is it a Polish spelling? I didn't realise - never seen it spelt like that before.

Lionnn · 23/08/2016 21:09

Sorry, I really should have put it in the original post. It's the Polish spelling. So I guess I'm just looking for opinions on Benedict/Benedykt

I know one.

he's Polish. his hobbies are reading and being polite.

he's dreamy.

SirNiallDementia · 23/08/2016 21:10

I really like the name Benedict (and as you are Polish, it would be appropriate to use the Polish spelling!). Just beware that english people might want to pronounce it Ben -eh- dykt instead of Ben- eh - dikt just because of how it's written.

Gmbk · 23/08/2016 21:10

If you are Polish then go for it.

Odd question but do you have an obviously Polish surname? If not then people may assume it's a unique spelling.

Mummyshortlegz · 23/08/2016 21:11

It's a lovely name, people may not realise the spelling is Polish and you may have to correct it but that is up to you as to how bothered you are by that.

Somerville · 23/08/2016 21:12

As you can see, OP, to English people it looks like a made-up spelling of Benedict. Grin

But it has a nice sound, and Benedict XVI serving as Pope so recently, plus Benedict Cumberbatch, means Benedict is relatively common around where I live. Most people would be able to get their heads around Benedykt, but you'll got lots of misspellings.

honeysucklejasmine · 23/08/2016 21:12

There's a lot of threads around here lately where the OP announces an unusually spelt name, let's people comment, and then reveals it's actually the correct spelling in a different country, that they are from.

Is it so hard to say "Hi. We're thinking g Benedykt. We're Polish and we'd like to use the traditional Polish spelling."?

You might get good quality replies immediately then.

Buttwing · 23/08/2016 21:12

I love the name it was on my short list for both my boys spelt benedict but we are not polish.

anorakgirl · 23/08/2016 21:12

Benedict is lovely. Not so sure about Benedyct but if it is a traditional spelling in your culture go for it!

exWifebeginsat40 · 23/08/2016 21:12

I think it's fab.

red faces all round, eh?

Somerville · 23/08/2016 21:13

his hobbies are reading and being polite.

Dream man potential, indeed.

honeysucklejasmine · 23/08/2016 21:13
