People will call him Bendy dik. Sorry OP.

Better you have the heads-up now.

DownWithThisSortaThing · 23/08/2016 21:15

Yes please ignore my try hard comment Blush I'm not a fan of unique spellings but of course it's appropriate for you to choose a Polish spelling with you being Polish and all. You could just say 'it's Benedykt with a y and a k' when someone's writing it down to save you having to spell it out every time.
Like I say it's a very nice, classic name Smile

ExitPursuedByABear · 23/08/2016 21:15

Benedict is a lovely name. Spell it in your own language.

pennyunwise · 23/08/2016 21:19

People will call him Bendy dik

I would never have thought of that tbh

Nelleflowerpot · 23/08/2016 21:20

I do like Benedict and as you are polish your spelling is ok in fact absolutely correct I assume it his with a polish surname? . If not seriously go for traditional spelling.

Honestly, quite glad I didn't make it obvious! It's nice to realise how many people will actually struggle with it (although, I agree, should have said Blush) surname is Lis.

Might try and find another name to consider as well. I didn't think of bendy dick either, not sure how many people would?

I like the name Benedict ..I'm a cumberbatch fan and I have a nephew with it as a middle name ..personally I'd spell it the English way but just because it's easier on the eye iywim

Bendy dik made me spit my tea lol

Somerville · 23/08/2016 21:25

What is the Polish form of Benjamin? Would that be a goer?

In my experience all the little Benedicts become Ben when they start at school.. Benjamin's become Ben or Benji.

Lionnn · 23/08/2016 21:26

We did consider these (removed all names that have Polish spellings):

  • Adrian
  • Daniel
  • Ernest
  • Gabriel

Love Izaak too, but the same issue with the spelling, isn't it? Sad

whifflesqueak · 23/08/2016 21:26

my Benedykt was universally called Benski on account of his Polish surname.

this nickname was entirely endearing in his case but worth keeping in mind I guess...

GinIsIn · 23/08/2016 21:28

I love the name Benedict but I do think most people will think it's a made up spelling as its not one they are familiar with. And oh dear - now someone has pointed out Bendy Dik and you've mentioned the surname I think that might be worse - Bendy Dickless?!

GinIsIn · 23/08/2016 21:29

Ernest is really sweet.

Lionnn · 23/08/2016 21:30

Bendy dickless Grin I don't notice it... Is it that obvious!?

We loved Bruno too?

My favourite Polish name is Henryk, similar but different enough from the English version.

OSETmum · 23/08/2016 21:31

Don't remove the Polish names! I can't say I'm a huge fan of Benedict or Benedykt though, I do know a Polish Oskar which I prefer to Oscar actually.

UmbongoUnchained · 23/08/2016 21:33

Don't worry about the spelling!
It's only people on mumsnet who give a shit. No one in real life will care. My son is going to have a Russian spelling of his middle name which I posted about before and was told it was stupid. It's nobody's business but yours. If you like the name and the spelling then go for it.

wenchystrumpet · 23/08/2016 21:33

Or Andrzej?

crayfish · 23/08/2016 21:33

I take it you are Polish but live in the UK? I would still use the Polish spelling, I think it's nice to use the spelling which reflects your culture. Saying that, a lot of British people will assume it's a made-up name but you/he can correct them.

Longdistance · 23/08/2016 21:34

Go with the English spelling.

My parents are not English, and used the English spelling of my name. It had served me well.

SirNiallDementia · 23/08/2016 21:35

Ooh I like Henryk! That would work because it's different enough from the English version of the name.

pennyunwise · 23/08/2016 21:35

I don't think kids at school will even think about it to be honest, because it sounds exactly the same as the English version.

I went to school with a Krzysztof - everyone just called him "Kris".

Lionnn · 23/08/2016 21:36

Thanks for all these suggestions Smile and opinions/advice.

Does Izaak look very unique? Or could that work? Bruno is a nice medium ground.

Henryk is lovely

I know a Rabbi Benedykt. He is a lovely guy. Good strong name. I like it.

Somerville · 23/08/2016 21:38

Izaak doesn't look 'unique' to my eye. I like that spelling.
