Do we let our 3 year choose...

Baby number 2 is due in September and we already have a DD who turned 3 in April. We waited until the 12 week scan to tell her and are trying to prepare and involve her as much as we can in the build up. She came to the 20 week scan and we'd explained for weeks before you didn't get to choose whether it was a boy/girl - she was still very definite she wanted a sister and it took some sinking in when we found out it was a boy. We are now over that hurdle and she's excited for a brother but is insisting we call him Jack. Whilst we don't mind Jack (I actually wanted Jaxon but DH said no way) our preference is Lewis and whenever we try to refer to him by this name she tells us he is called Jack. Shes actually telling everyone it is Jack (we also have no idea where that has come from). Part of me thinks we don't mind the name so let her pick it but DH says not...any advice??

Jack's a nice name.

Why not?

Chippednailvarnishing · 03/06/2016 18:36

Would you let your three year old make any other important decision? I doubt it.

NorbertDentressangle · 03/06/2016 18:36

At least it's a real name and not some crazy made-up nonsense.

Middle name maybe?

Tommy · 03/06/2016 18:38

I think if you stop talking about it , she'll have forgotten by the time the baby comes. And I agree with chippednailvarnish!

NoTractorsAtTheTable · 03/06/2016 18:39

Lewis Jack is quite nice!

Mine would have suggested Egg or Massey Ferguson Hmm

LadyAntonella · 03/06/2016 18:39

I prefer Jack to Jaxon or Lewis so I'd say let her! But then if you love Lewis it's difficult...

SimileMilly · 03/06/2016 18:41

DD(also 3) wants to call her new baby brother Fox. It won't be happening.

DramaAlpaca · 03/06/2016 18:42

I wouldn't let anyone other than me & DH decide our children's names.

GeorgeTheThird · 03/06/2016 18:43

Only if you like the name. Jack is nice. Jaxon is horrid.

GeorgeTheThird · 03/06/2016 18:43

My friend let her three year old choose her car colour. She then drove a yellow car for ten years. I don't think it was a good idea.

MrsTerryPratchett · 03/06/2016 18:44

She has good taste. I would go with it!

Chrisinthemorning · 03/06/2016 18:44

I know at least one Thomas who was named by their big brother

MrsTerryPratchett · 03/06/2016 18:44

DD chose our car interior and colour. Luckily she also has excellent taste!

Twooter · 03/06/2016 18:46

I prefer jack to Lewis so I'd be tempted. But on principle, I wouldn't let a three year old sibling choose the name.

MrsSparkles · 03/06/2016 18:47

Middle name? Or come up with a list of pre-approved selections to pick from.

Dd (4) was insistent her baby sister was to be called alice. She seems to have forgotten about it for now....

AnnaMarlowe · 03/06/2016 18:49

No, she's 3 yo.

I prefer Jack to Lewis

LolaStarr · 03/06/2016 18:50

I agree with a PP, just don't mention it until the baby is born then call him what you want to call him, she'll forget about it. According to my 2 year old his little brother is going to be SpongeBob Frank Hmm

Owlytellsmesecrets · 03/06/2016 18:52

If we did that then our daughter would be called Super Baby Oso!

Nah .... Not their decision!

LetThereBeCupcakes · 03/06/2016 18:53

Our 3YO has named unborn baby Poppy. Unfortunately there appears to be no room for negotiation and he's told everyone we know!

I'm thinking we might go with it and when he has kids of his own I'll insist on naming one of them in exchange. Grin

Xmasbaby11 · 03/06/2016 18:54

No she can't choose! I wouldn't entertain the idea.

Smooshface · 03/06/2016 18:56

We let our 4 year old pick middle name. She picked it then when she was born told everyone she was called another name she had picked! I wouldn't trust them with first name as they are fickle anyway. We stuck with her original choice of middle name but picked our own first name.

LetThereBeCupcakes · 03/06/2016 18:58

Smoosh DS has been telling people he's going to have a baby sister named Poppy since November. I didn't conceive until late December! He is quite adamant... Confused

ArgyMargy · 03/06/2016 19:01

Jack certainly preferable to Jaxon, so yes let her decide. And probably let her make all your big decisions from now on. Grin

WellErrr · 03/06/2016 19:04

She's three. She's not in charge.

Use the name YOU want, don't be manipulated by a toddler!

Scoopmuckdizzy · 03/06/2016 19:06

No- you choose your baby's name. Let her name the goldfish.

My 2yo wants to call his baby brother 'Nee-naw'. I won't be calling him Nee-Naw.
