Seriously OP, any of the other names you have suggested are preferable. Alabama is child abuse territory. Sorry.

And it's just plain weird given that your other children have perfectly nice names. This little one will grow up wondering what she did to make you hate her so much.

EllenDegenerate · 10/05/2016 22:24

Seriously buttered,

I value your opinion as much as any other but I feel you're being a little bit hyperbolic.

Even if she hates her name (and my mum gave me a corker) I doubt she'll assume I hate her, all other evidence hopefully pointing to the contrary.

Thanks for your input though.

You've been great Smile

Ok, well it's your call. But I like all your other names a lot more! Wink

bellissimiaow · 10/05/2016 22:25

I get you OP Smile it's my fav film too and before my dcs came along I had two cats - Clarence and Alabama. I may well have named my children either one of these names (if I hadn't already used them on the cats dammit)

EllenDegenerate · 10/05/2016 22:29

Thank you beliss
Your cats had cool names thoughGrin

Op you're not following the rules. The rules are, you propose a name. Everyone else goes urgh yuk, child abuse, bullied, blah blah and you're supposed to go "gosh you're right, ill name my child Sophie instead".

GipsyDanger · 10/05/2016 22:42

As in, sweet home? Hmm
I don't feel so bad for seriously considering Hannibal for my wee boy Grin

BlueUggs · 10/05/2016 22:47

What about Arizona? There's an Arizona in Grey's Anatomy.

RedOnHerHedd · 10/05/2016 22:47

Alabama slammer!
No.
Just no.

CocktailQueen · 10/05/2016 22:48

You know what? I usually hate any out-there names, but there's something pleasing about saying Alabama...

It's a nice word.

Having said that, I wouldn't use it for a child. Middle name, maybe?

GoofyIsACow · 10/05/2016 22:56

Alabama Balonz... It's the only answer!

I really disliked Alabama when i opened the thread but the more i say it it's growing on me! Blush

Mrsfrumble · 10/05/2016 23:01

It is very pleasing to say isn't it? But also kind of unnatural with an English accent, especially a southern one. I keep wanting to say Ala-bar-ma.

Also on the bright side, the Alabama coast has some really beautiful beaches.

Mrsfrumble · 10/05/2016 23:04

I've also just remembered that the Alabama State University football team's nickname is "The Crimson Tide", which I swear is also a euphamism for period.
[declaring myself the official source of useless facts about the state of Alabama]

Ankleswingers · 10/05/2016 23:08

Your other children have fantastic names. I adore the name Delilah!

I'm just not keen on Alabama. Not at all.

lulucappuccino · 10/05/2016 23:15

God, that's a horrible word to name a child.

I know a woman who named her baby Memphis, after some character in a film (Nicolas Cage?), and people always ask why, particularly as she's never even been to Memphis.

'Alabama' is dick-headed, try-hard and seriously naff. But then giving a child an "ironic" name is very cringe worthy.

EllenDegenerate · 10/05/2016 23:19

Calling me a dickhead won't change my mind lulu.

You did make me laugh though. Have a Star

Don't post asking for thoughts if you dislike honest opinions.

EllenDegenerate · 10/05/2016 23:24

I don't dislike it,
I thanked you for making me laugh.

I asked for your opinion, I gave you a Star

What's your problem?

Just for the record, the name Georgia seriously predates the name of the state. Georgia of Clermont was a French nun/Saint who died in AD500; the Italian feminine for George (Giorgio) has always been Giorgia as far as I know.

The state was named after an (English) name, which was already accepted as a girl's name alongside Georgiana and Georgina (I think - not sure when the latter occurred). Whereas Alabama takes its name from a Choctaw word, and has connotations in the UK that an established and popular name like Georgia doesn't have. Quite different.

lulucappuccino · 10/05/2016 23:29

No problem. Especially as I'm not called Alabama.

EllenDegenerate · 10/05/2016 23:32

Thanks for that info Jassy.

Although it doesn't necessarily dissuade me from Alabama it's really kind of you to go to the trouble of finding the information and posting it here for my (our) perusal Smile

Your hilarious lulu.

I like you!

AndTakeYourPenguinWithYou · 10/05/2016 23:33

You get though that Georgia the state was named for George, the king? Its the Latinate feminine version of George. It was a name long before it was a state!
