Ellen the problem is everyone else will associate it with the place first.

However if you love it, and are prepared to put up with that why not.

albertcampionscat · 10/05/2016 19:54

Albuquerque?

jamenhej · 10/05/2016 19:57

I used to teach an Alabama. Her friends always called her Bama (pronounced as though it had two m's). I like it, actually!

zombiesarecoming · 10/05/2016 19:58

It is my DD's Middle name as True Romance is one of my DW's favourite films

So it would be a yes from me

butteredmuffin · 10/05/2016 19:59

For a boy or girl? (I think it's bad either way though, sorry. )

What on earth would you shorten it to?

EllenDegenerate · 10/05/2016 20:16

I understand that not everybody will imbue the name with the same cultural references as I snd that is to be expected.

I wonder why the name Georgia escapes such negative connotations though?
Geographically and historically it is very similar to Alabama if a quick Google search serves is anything to go by.

Georgia is almost universally approved of on MN. Any glaringly obvious reasons why that might be?

Because it's actually a name.
As well as the name of a US state.

titchy · 10/05/2016 20:32

Errr cos Georgia is an actual name and Alabama isn't....

Ankleswingers · 10/05/2016 20:33

Are you being serious?

That's not even a name, surely.

No OP, please don't saddle a child with that for the rest of their life.Sad

EllenDegenerate · 10/05/2016 20:38

Oh, I see.

So if enough people use the name of a US state with negative connotations it becomes an accepted name and is therefore immune from impunity.

Fair enough.

Alabama sounds nicer than Georgia. ( and is apparently home to fewer members of the KKK, plus Tarantino used it.)

Alabama wins Grin

I like places names but unfortunately Alabama is like calling your child Birmingham.

pinkyredrose · 10/05/2016 20:42

Georgia as a name is a derivative of Georgina, it isn't derived from the place Georgia, Alabama.

EllenDegenerate · 10/05/2016 20:45

Georgia isn't in Alabama Hmm

Birmingham is though, so surely naming a child Alabama is akin to naming her England rather than Birmingham?

Or West-Midlands if we're being pedantic/ hyphenated.

Just something to add to your decision making. The meaning of the name 'Alabama':

"the traditional story is that Alabama comes from the Creek Indian language (meaning "tribal town"). Other sources claim it is derived from the Choctaw Indian language, translating as "thicket-clearers" or "vegetation-gatherers*

butteredmuffin · 10/05/2016 20:48

Alabama sounds nicer than Georgia.

No, OP, it really doesn't.

Please don't do this to your child.

bloodymaria · 10/05/2016 20:53

Yeah, definitely go for Birmingham op.

UmbongoUnchained · 10/05/2016 20:55

Don't like Alabama but have always really loved Tenessee

Lunar1 · 10/05/2016 20:59

Why don't you like your child? Is this name revenge for a couple of stretch marks?

You've already decided, haven't you?

EllenDegenerate · 10/05/2016 21:13

No I honestly haven't.

It is appealing though and so far no logical reasons not to continue to keep it on the 'maybe' list.

Flo Rida manages to get away with it...

Blu · 10/05/2016 21:19

What Titchy said.

butteredmuffin · 10/05/2016 21:19

There isn't even anything good your poor child could shorten it to. Sad
