Ellen the problem is everyone else will associate it with the place first.

However if you love it, and are prepared to put up with that why not.

I used to teach an Alabama. Her friends always called her Bama (pronounced as though it had two m's). I like it, actually!

I understand that not everybody will imbue the name with the same cultural references as I snd that is to be expected.

I wonder why the name Georgia escapes such negative connotations though?
Geographically and historically it is very similar to Alabama if a quick Google search serves is anything to go by.

Georgia is almost universally approved of on MN. Any glaringly obvious reasons why that might be?

So if enough people use the name of a US state with negative connotations it becomes an accepted name and is therefore immune from impunity.

Fair enough.

Alabama sounds nicer than Georgia. ( and is apparently home to fewer members of the KKK, plus Tarantino used it.)

I like places names but unfortunately Alabama is like calling your child Birmingham.

Georgia as a name is a derivative of Georgina, it isn't derived from the place Georgia, Alabama.

Birmingham is though, so surely naming a child Alabama is akin to naming her England rather than Birmingham?

Or West-Midlands if we're being pedantic/ hyphenated.

Just something to add to your decision making. The meaning of the name 'Alabama':

"the traditional story is that Alabama comes from the Creek Indian language (meaning "tribal town"). Other sources claim it is derived from the Choctaw Indian language, translating as "thicket-clearers" or "vegetation-gatherers*
