I really like it.
DP is unsure.

Opinions?

Is the immediate association most people will have not a logical reason to avoid it?

Mrsfluff · 10/05/2016 21:20

Well I love it OP!!

Barefootcontessa84 · 10/05/2016 21:21

You want to call your child something "ironic"? Hmm A bit of gentle Tuesday night entertainment at least.

Blu · 10/05/2016 21:22

It could be shortened to Al.
Would probably become Alla (really??) or Ali, or Bami or Bamma, or , in school, wham or wham bam.

butteredmuffin · 10/05/2016 21:23

Blu - all of which are pretty hideous.

BlossomCat · 10/05/2016 21:25

I just think of Alabama Shakes.
That has huge micky taking potential...

EllenDegenerate · 10/05/2016 21:25

Not really Blu, the whole Georgia line of reasoning kind of negated that point for me.

I'm with Mrsfluff I love it.

Horses for courses this naming business isn't it?

Personally I perceive Harriet as tantamount to emotional abuse, but I'd probably never be so rude as to tell a person who was planning to name their child Hartiet that I thought so.

In any case thanks for all the opinions, I have a good few months left to settle on a name if I do choose Alabama I'll be sure to announce it on here for your delectation Smile

Harriet isn't the kind of name children get bullied for though, is it?

EllenDegenerate · 10/05/2016 21:38

I don't know buttered, I don't know any Harriet's. I'd ask my children but I like to think that it wouldn't occur to them to bully a child, for their name or otherwise,

How many Alabamas do you know?

Are they all bullied because their name is Alabama?

OP posts:
butteredmuffin · 10/05/2016 21:45

I don't know any Alabamas.

I do know children who have been bullied for having weird names though.

Honestly, I think if you are going to give your child a strange name, at least make it something which is easy to shorten to something more "normal" sounding, in case they hate it.

EllenDegenerate · 10/05/2016 21:50

honestly i think a child has an equal chance of hating their popular name as they do of hating a more unusual moniker.

That's what middle names are for.

What do you think of Alabama Jayden?

OP posts:
puddlejumpingqueen · 10/05/2016 21:51

Your reasoning around Georgia is most illogical. Georgia as a feminine form of George predates the state of Georgia. Ergo it is a "proper" name in its own right.

UmbongoUnchained · 10/05/2016 21:54

Me and my brothers have ridiculous names but we've never been bullied because of them so you never know!

EllenDegenerate · 10/05/2016 21:59

If you think of George rather than the state when you hear 'Georgia' then fair enough but I don't.

Georgina is the feminine variant of George as far as I have always been aware.

Girls have been named Alabama for over a century and so it is a name in its own right, if less popular (common) than other notable choices.

You are clearly trying to be provocative Ellen. It's early in the week so I don't think people will have much appetite or patience to play along...

butteredmuffin · 10/05/2016 22:03

Barefoot I hope you are right and this is a wind up.

Barefootcontessa84 · 10/05/2016 22:05

God me too, buttered...

EllenDegenerate · 10/05/2016 22:06

I can assure you that any perceived provocation is unintentional.

(Apart from the Jayden bit, I was taking the piss there, I shan't deny it)

OP posts:
butteredmuffin · 10/05/2016 22:07

Even Jayden is better than Alabama, IMO.

EllenDegenerate · 10/05/2016 22:10

In all honesty I think Alabama Lavinia has a nice ring to it,

Alabama Magdalene

Alabama Josephine

Something along those lines.

Two syllable surname beginning with L

OP posts:
butteredmuffin · 10/05/2016 22:11

Josephine Alabama then. Please.

EllenDegenerate · 10/05/2016 22:13

I don't like Josephine enough to be a first name I don't think

I'm also considering Lavinia and Magdalene as well as Leonora and Marielle/a

Alabama is currently my favourite though.

Other DC are Eden Sylvie Reuben and Delilah.

Any other suggestions?

JonSnowsBeardClippings · 10/05/2016 22:15

Alabama Jayden? For a girl?

NannawifeofBaldr · 10/05/2016 22:15

Now, now people we've had much, much worse names on MN.

I still haven't recovered from the apparently serious thread proposing 'Huckleberry'. Quite a few people liked it too if memory serves.

Ellen if you and your DH love it go for it, you could start a theme if you have any more DC, these are my favourites:

Washington
Tennessee
Virginia
Carolina
Iowa
Pennsylvania
Indiana

EllenDegenerate · 10/05/2016 22:18

My DD1 goes to school with an Indiana, nn Indi,

I quite like it although probably wouldn't choose it.
