Wilder as a girls name

I am due any day now and been pretty set on a name most of my pregnancy but earlier today I heard a parent calling out to their daughter 'Wilder' in the park and I just fell in love with the name.

I couldn't see any threads on here about the name and it seems pretty unusual for a girl. What are your opinions?

I miss read it as wider, do hope she is a slim teenager as wider Wilder would be an easy phrase to use for bullies :-(

BeckyWithTheHair · 02/05/2016 15:34

Are you sure it was Wilder and not Whyler or Wiler?

I don't hate the name Wilder but I wouldn't use it purely because of the associations people would make with it.

DerelictMyBalls · 03/05/2016 21:18

I like it.

NaffOffMartha · 03/05/2016 21:21

Is your surname Bull OP?

JewryMember · 04/05/2016 11:00

Bloody hell, do I really have to list the various nationalities who have hard to pronounce and spell names? If I find Aoife & friends difficult to spell or pronounce more than Celtic names I'll bloody well say so! Some touchy folk round here Hmm

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 04/05/2016 11:03

I'd be interested to know what your previous choice was.

Wilder - no. Sucks, sorry. But you don't care, so that's your choice. I would have HATED to be called that as a child. "Wild child" - nope, "Wilder". Yay. Not.

JewryMember · 04/05/2016 15:22

It is my guess that those saying 'I would hate to have been called Wilder as a child'^ are called Linda. Or Sue.

MadameDePompom · 04/05/2016 15:25

I'd hate to be called Wilder and my name is far from being a Linda or a Sue. It's most definitely a 'and how exactly do you spell that?' kind of name.

pieceofpurplesky · 04/05/2016 15:37

It's up there with Randy (a friend of mine).
'Hi I'm Randy'
'I'm Wilder'

Not a great choice OP.

LadyAntonella · 04/05/2016 16:05

Well obviously you don't have to list every nationality jewry, but there was really no need to bring up anyone's nationality at all.

I'm not going to get into a debate with you here, but the fact you randomly lashed out at a group (an "army" if you will) of people from a specific nationality, when no one else was talking about that nation makes me Hmm. That's all - not trying to be touchy.

MadameDePompom · 04/05/2016 16:09

If I find Aoife & friends difficult to spell or pronounce more than Celtic names I'll bloody well say so!

What are 'Celtic' names?

Alisvolatpropiis · 04/05/2016 16:18

You know that Aoife and friends are Celtic names right? If you're inclined towards using generic phrases like that. Scotland, Ireland and Wales are the Celtic nations in the uk. Two of whom had Gaelic as their language.

MyNewBearTotoro · 04/05/2016 16:29

Is it pronounced to rhyme with milder or builder?

I quite like Wilda to rhyme with builder but not a fan of Wilder with the same spelling/ sound as the word meaning to be more wild.

I agree with others who've said once she hits her teens she will be teased mercifully by those who suggest she is 'wild' in bed etc. I also just don't think it sounds or looks like a name. I might at least spell it Wylda but to be honest I wouldn't use it.

I like an unusual name and I wouldn't be put off by other people's negative reactions BUT I think it is important to consider how a child's name might be used against them (I was teased at school for my name, it's a normal name but doesn't go well with my surname. The teasing made me unhappy and I was angry at my parents for not being more careful when choosing.) and I'd worry Wilder could easily lead to bullying when she was older.

mamapants · 04/05/2016 16:56

I really like it. Surprised by the passion of the negative people here. Even if it isn't your cup of tea I really don't see any reason to get worked up about it or think of it as a name you are saddling a child with.
Also liked a pp suggestion of Wilder Rose. Very pretty.

Canyouforgiveher · 04/05/2016 16:57

It's up there with Randy (a friend of mine).
'Hi I'm Randy'
'I'm Wilder'

I know a Woody who was married to a Randy.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 05/05/2016 03:05

Nah, not a Linda, Sue nor anything like it.

Canyou - that's, umm, unfortunate! Grin

HarleyQuinneee · 05/05/2016 03:17

My children have unusual names but I think this just has. ... sexual connotations about it. Or will be used by blokes in that sense at least. I think it would be quite hard growing up with a name like this. It sounds like a pornstar name.

JewryMember · 05/05/2016 03:24

If you're inclined towards using generic phrases like that.

(Massive don't-give-a-PC-shit sigh)

TickleMyTeacakes · 05/05/2016 10:36

Agree that it has a porn star vibe. Which will be handy if she becomes a porn star I suppose.

Alisvolatpropiis · 05/05/2016 11:13

Oooh, you're a "I'm not PC, me" type. Gotcha. Hmm

It isn't a name.

Poor kid.

Burgatroyd · 05/05/2016 14:52

I like it!

albertcampionscat · 05/05/2016 15:16

I rather like Wilder. It sounds more American artist than porn star to me, but I would give the kid a trad middle name just in case they don't feel like being Wilder all their life.

KayTee87 · 05/05/2016 16:58

Obviously up to you and I can see you like it, personally I can only think of the names she might be called at school.
