Wilder as a girls name

I am due any day now and been pretty set on a name most of my pregnancy but earlier today I heard a parent calling out to their daughter 'Wilder' in the park and I just fell in love with the name.

I couldn't see any threads on here about the name and it seems pretty unusual for a girl. What are your opinions?

OP posts:

Ah you're one of the 'the fact you all hate it makes me love it more' brigade.

RiverTam · 29/04/2016 21:24

Hmm, I don't know. It's very American-sounding but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Maybe as a middle name?

JewryMember · 29/04/2016 21:24

I feel I should hate this name but I really, really like it.

tilder · 29/04/2016 21:26

Wasn't Wilder chosen as a surname by women living communally? A way of removing the male aspect from the surname?

I seem to remember that a fair bit of free love was involved too.

MitzyLeFrouf · 29/04/2016 21:27

I think that was Wilde tilder.

MitzyLeFrouf · 29/04/2016 21:28

Actually I've just checked and it was Wild.

AllPowerfulLizardPerson · 29/04/2016 21:35

I'd hear the comparative adjective.

Will she be your middle child by any chance?

wonkylampshade · 29/04/2016 21:53

Glad to hear it OP, I salute you!

SuburbanRhonda · 29/04/2016 22:08

You like the fact that most people don't like it, OP?

Why did you ask then? Hmm

SoupDragon · 29/04/2016 22:32

Thanks for the feedback all - I like that it has evoked such a response. It has absolutely solidified it as my number 1! Can't wait for my little Wilder to get here!

Poor child.

SoupDragon · 29/04/2016 22:33

Her teenage years are going to be shit.

tilder · 29/04/2016 22:34

Thank you mitzy. I knew there was something.

BertrandRussell · 29/04/2016 22:35

And you aren't even prepared to think about the fact that your child will have to explain/repeat/spell her name every single time she gives it to anyone for thenext 80 years?

How extraordinarily self centered of you.

staghunter · 29/04/2016 22:39

I love "are you getting enough sleep? " very good question.

Wilder has too many syllables.

dulcefarniente · 29/04/2016 22:46

Probably won't be the next 80 yrs Bertrand she'll be changing it by deed poll as soon as she reaches adulthood Grin

Alisvolatpropiis · 30/04/2016 15:13

Go the whole hog on try hard front and give her the middle name danger.

sarahsinlondon · 30/04/2016 15:16

Sam Taylor Johnson has a Wylda if that helps.

HeteronormativeHaybales · 30/04/2016 15:24

^^What Bertrand said. FFS. You can be creative/imaginative/unusual in naming a baby without being cruel. Giving her that 'name' (it's not a (first) name, it's a comparative adjective or a surname) would be the pinnacle of self-absorption.

Times lik this I think the 'pick names from an approved list' system some countries aöpparently have has a lot going for it.

AmysTiara · 30/04/2016 15:28

No way, it sounds like a porn star name

Good for you!
....Bad for your kid....

JewryMember · 30/04/2016 18:31

Why are you lot so horrible? Is it because you have neither the guts not the inspiration to have named your own offspring anything slightly off the wall? Are you so vicious to the army of women in here who choose hard-to-pronounce-and-spell Irish names?

OP, you've annoyed the mumsnet veterans by your unwillingness to toe the line. Good for you! It's a great name better than saccharine Willow

Goingtobeawesome · 30/04/2016 18:34

When is your baby due?

JewryMember · 30/04/2016 18:35

Soupdragon and Suburban seem particularly frothy at the OPs disinclination to climb down. Bizarre.

eatmytoes888 · 30/04/2016 18:40

I think it sounds quite boho and free. I like it.

I also like Willa which is probably a little more popular than Wilder. There's always Wilhemina which is a fab name!
