Wilder as a girls name

I am due any day now and been pretty set on a name most of my pregnancy but earlier today I heard a parent calling out to their daughter 'Wilder' in the park and I just fell in love with the name.

I couldn't see any threads on here about the name and it seems pretty unusual for a girl. What are your opinions?

I quite like it, makes me think of Laura Ingalls Wilder. In the 'surname as first name' genre I have heard far far worse!

squoosh · 29/04/2016 15:39

What about Wyatt if you like that prairie vibe? I'm not mad about it for a girl but it's certainly better than Wilder.

Flopsyhopsy · 29/04/2016 15:43

"I wouldn't. Imagine the name shortening, 'Hi Willie'."

I think there's much more risk of being called Willie if you're a male William!

Maybe but I wouldn't risk it Wink

Flopsyhopsy · 29/04/2016 15:47

Fair enough Smile. I'm not keen on Wilder either, I find it quite masculine sounding.

ifigoup · 29/04/2016 15:47

OP, I really like Wilder. I've only heard of it as a boys' name, but there's no reason you couldn't use it for a girl!

rumblingDMexploitingbstds · 29/04/2016 15:51

I'd be always thinking 'Wilder than....'

No.

I met a child the other day called Mouse. (Totally beside the point. Just still gobsmacked.)

Hariasa · 29/04/2016 15:57

Mouse? As an actual name rather than a nick name? Oh my.

Hariasa · 29/04/2016 15:59

My problem with Wilder is what if she turns out to be a shy, retiring, very conservative introvert?

squoosh · 29/04/2016 16:02

I hope Mouse is just the girl's cutsie family nickname!

SoupDragon · 29/04/2016 16:02

Try introducing yourself to new people as Wilder. Give it as your name in Starbucks.

Then get a pet and call it Wilder.

SuburbanRhonda · 29/04/2016 16:02

Absolutely no.

You heard it in the park and liked it? Hmm

ShmooBooMoo · 29/04/2016 16:04

I am wondering if you actually misheard, though I can't think of a girls' name that sounds remotely like that!

Also, it'd be a life sentence for her if you gave your daughter that name...

ShmooBooMoo · 29/04/2016 16:05

I'm wondering if it was more like: 'Honestly, this child gets wilder and WILDER....GET BACK HERE!'
^ sounds more likely than a person actually calling their child Wilder.

rumblingDMexploitingbstds · 29/04/2016 16:08

I hoped so too squoosh but no..... she was actually called Mouse.

RainIsAGoodThing · 29/04/2016 16:10

I like it too OP but I won't be using it - which is a good job, as SIL is set on it!

Sophronia · 29/04/2016 17:06

I know a boy with the mn Wilder. I don't like it on a girl.

Mummyoftwo91 · 29/04/2016 19:14

Not overly keen on wilder but I think Wilde is pretty!

SoupDragon · 29/04/2016 19:27

"Hi! I'm Wilde"

Oh yes. Very pretty indeed. Hmm

wonkylampshade · 29/04/2016 19:33

I quite like it too OP. I'm not a fan of the Isabella / Sophia type names though and like a bit of originality within reason.

Mummyoftwo91 · 29/04/2016 21:04

Soupdragon names are down to personal choice judgy pants!

A4Document · 29/04/2016 21:08

Not keen but there are similar names that are nicer IMO. How about Matilda (Tilda) or Lydia? I like the suggestion of Willow too.

There seems to be a fashion for surnames ending in "er" to be used as first names at the moment, mostly boys names but sometimes girls. Tyler, Archer, Cooper, Carter. I'm not keen on them.

WellieWanger · 29/04/2016 21:08

I love it but had only considered it for a boy. If you like it go for it.xx

sweetpotatofries · 29/04/2016 21:21

Thanks for the feedback all - I like that it has evoked such a response. It has absolutely solidified it as my number 1! Can't wait for my little Wilder to get here! Grin

If you like it use it, don't worry what others think you don't need to please everyone.
As a mum to a DS called Chase (this name gets slated on here) I will say they have a habit of living up to their name. I spent his toddler years chasing after him, he ran everywhere. So if you go with Wilder expect a wild child.
