Can I name my child after a vegetable?

My DH has a list of traditional names he wants to call our child. Things like Mary or Sarah if it's a girl and John or Michael if it's a boy.
I've talked to my friends about it and they all seem to think this is a good idea but I have my own list of names that my DH thinks I got rid of.
What I want to know is; are these names good names for a child? So far I've got: Endive, Guava, Pepper, Radish and Zucchini. I like them because they sound exotic and unique.
What do you think?

If you're common like cleaty and me then you have to go with baked beans.

originalmavis · 16/03/2016 19:07

Is lettuce short for Letitia? Or did I imagine that?

I wonder if people who name their children after 'things' call their pets people names, like Bill.

cleaty · 16/03/2016 19:08

I love baked beans. Or mushy peas?

StepAwayFromTheThesaurus · 16/03/2016 19:11

Wikipedia has a list of fruits and vegetables from which you could find a nice obscure vegetable to name your offspring after.

Sea vegetables might be a good place to start. They maybe be more hipster even than kale.

Kombu
Hijiki
Aonori
Nori

I know, yes, a lot of these posts are sarcastic. That's why I haven't told my DH that I still like those names but there are some genuinely nice, helpful replies here somewhere and at least I have those few who don't completely disagree with me!

Baked beans for a boy, mushy peas for a girl.

cleaty · 16/03/2016 19:12

Petis pois

LynetteScavo · 16/03/2016 19:12

Turnip would be a great middle name.

PreAdvent13610 · 16/03/2016 19:12

Scorzonera, probably best if you have Russian heritage

WinnieTheW0rm · 16/03/2016 19:14

Can we combine this with the 'big fat lefty' thread?

Che Guava

When I was young there were vegetables and fruit that were exotic that are now commonplace. Just be aware that what you pick may not sound exotic in 20 years time.

cleaty · 16/03/2016 19:15

Sugar snap for a girl, then you can call her sugar.

mrsschu · 16/03/2016 19:17

Of course you can call your child after a vegetable. I recommend Parsnip.

borntobequiet · 16/03/2016 19:20

Mary Jane

AGrinWithoutACat · 16/03/2016 19:20

Can you compromise and possibly unforgivable on mumsnet sin and chose a traditional name like Phillipa with a family nickname of Pepper?

DD2 has a very unusual name that I lifted from a favourite authors book but it does not sound too outlandish and everyone has commented positively - could that be another alternative to the Mary/Jane type names?

NewYearSameMe · 16/03/2016 19:20

I think Scallion would be bound to be naughtiest boy in class. Grin

I kind of like Chard, it's growing on me.

Have you considered herbs? Basil, Borage, Caraway, Burnet, Dill, Fennel, Lovage, Marjoram, Oregano, Parsley, Sage, Thyme. I quite like Fennel or Oregano.

lulucappuccino · 16/03/2016 19:22

Op, you ARE joking... aren't you?

OfficialMum123 · 16/03/2016 19:23

@NewYearSameMe I actually do like the name Sage. Thank you :)

Is fruit ok? I favour Satsuma. Classy. Or how about Dragon Fruit, although to be honest that wouldn't even raise an eyebrow in the originality stakes living round here....

OfficialMum123 · 16/03/2016 19:24

No, I'm not joking. I've always loved exotic sounding names

lulucappuccino · 16/03/2016 19:25

They're not exotic sounding. They're stupid sounding.

OvariesBeforeBrovaries · 16/03/2016 19:25

Custard-Apple. Everyone's doing double barelled names at the moment.

AnnieOnAMapleLeaf · 16/03/2016 19:26
