We live in the new forest and there is a well
known monument called the Rufus Stone here. Locally it's well known but would you make the association if you weren't from around here?
I love the nn Roo and Reuben and Rupert don't do it it for me, Rufus is such a beautiful name and I'm beginning to wonder why on earth I married someone with such a bloody generic surname!
Tell me can we do this to our son? I didn't even remember it was a place until a friend pointed it out.

Kim82 · 03/03/2016 21:04

Never heard of it either.

PeterRabbitt · 03/03/2016 21:16

My argument is getting stronger by the second Smile
Surname is Stone, the reason I didn't remember it originally was because the last time I think it was relevant to me was middle school history lessons!

I have a history degree and have good personal memories of Rufus Stone the place first snog with now DH but I'd smile, possibly acknowledge, and then let it go.

fastdaytears · 03/03/2016 21:31

Means nothing to me, and I love the name Rufus so I say do it!

fastdaytears · 03/03/2016 21:32

RaeSkywalker · 03/03/2016 21:33

FunkyPeacock · 03/03/2016 21:36

marmaladegranny · 03/03/2016 21:36

YoniMitchell · 03/03/2016 21:43

Never heard of it but I love that name!

ILikeUranus · 03/03/2016 21:49

Who? Never heard of it, and I'm not very far away tbh. Go for it.

HalfwayUpALadder · 03/03/2016 21:55

If you live miles from rufous stone and your surname is stone, then go ahead, it'll be a funny little story that will come up from time to time.

If you live near rufus stone and your surname is stone, you can't saddle your kid with that name and most locals will know it (it's signposted on the A31 fgs)

fieldfare · 03/03/2016 21:57

Sounds like a great name!

HumphreyCobblers · 03/03/2016 21:58

I like that name. But I have never heard of the Rufus stone, I wouldn't do it if I lived nearby.

fluffypenguinbelly · 03/03/2016 22:03

Rufus no, wouldn't make the connection.

Rufus Stone, absolutely would. It's signposted off of the main road through the New Forest so I see it every time I visit the South Coast. I have even ventured to the Rufus Stone.

It would be a strange name choice for someone living in the NF IIMO.
