Heard today:-

Spring-rose

At the doctors the other day was deliah-rose. Thought it was a misspell for Delilah but then maybe it's Delia?

And the when I worked in a nursery there was a little boy called deneil. Not too bad you say, till you knew his older brother was called Neil Hmm

There are people on here who do not appear to have heard of Other countries, Other cultures or even Other languages!

Though I do agree with Bertrand, there is a certain white western- centrism flavour to this thread.

I have to say I do find threads like this somewhat depressing for that reason. It does tend to reveal a certain subconscious dare I say it xenophobia.

I do however disagree that its purely a white western centrism. Many of the names on this thread would be used by white Americans without being thought of as too unusual. How many threads do you see where people complain of a name being 'too American'

It smacks more middle class Britain instead which is too scared to do anything but conform.

There are some beautiful, inspiring and amazing names on this thread. Everyone has their own reasons for choosing a name. As long as its not offensive I think anything goes and is fine.

I do love unusual names.

to be fair to all the misery guts saying things like "there is a certain white western- centrism flavour to this thread." or "do not appear to have heard of Other countries"

the thread title is UNUSUAL NAMES.... I'm sorry, but how many Oceans do you know? Or Frodos? Or Sukkis?

These are unusual names - that's not being racist...

TwistInMySobriety · 12/11/2015 09:39

I'm usually down on threads where people diss names from other cultures they haven't heard of but actually here I agree with 001. Saying a name is unusual isn't racist or ignorant, nor is it incompatible with finding a name beautiful, inspiring and amazing.

I recently met a Jet (baby boy) and his surname was diamond. Thought it was ace and he will surely grow up to be a rock star.

FindingNormal · 12/11/2015 09:58

Oh and I used to work in shank and one of the customer's was called mushroom. True story.

FindingNormal · 12/11/2015 09:58

Shank?! In a bank!

GETIFUYABASSA · 12/11/2015 10:09

Piffanie.
Like Tiffanie......but with a P.
This was at the start of my 20 year teaching career, so this child is an adult now.
Some names you never forget.

At the memorial parade the other day the Scout leader could be heard "Beavis.... Beavis! Come into line right now!" I was looking but couldn't see Butthead anywhere. I had to work hard to hold back the laughter.

Nataleejah · 12/11/2015 11:04

Maybe its a case that GP's receptionists or other customer service clerks simply misread/don't know how to read names properly?

I often get called "Nataleejah" when strangers try to read my name. Really want to kick their teeth in. Why can't they just read "Mrs. Very Regular Surname" in that case

RedToothBrush · 12/11/2015 11:27

Its the comments that are sneering or don't know that the name is popular somewhere else that are the issue.

BlackbirdSingsInTheDeadOfNight · 12/11/2015 12:12

Nigel. Nothing unusual about Nigel, except his brother is Vigel.

Booby (hopefully a typo!), Smiley and Hendrix - all in the local paper in one of those 'cute baby photo' comps.

Someone I met once had apparently taught siblings Porsche, Mercedes and Cosworth.

timelytess · 12/11/2015 12:14

lula = penis in Urdu slang

BirdintheWings · 12/11/2015 12:14

Spinoza. Is that common in other countries? An adult with a very, very English surname, at any rate.

Lweji · 12/11/2015 13:40

I've only seen Spinoza as a surname.

TwistInMySobriety · 12/11/2015 13:48

I'd agree with you on lots of other threads red but actually I think this one has been refreshingly free of sneering at forrin names.

Mummypigagain · 12/11/2015 14:07

Blade and Sunshine seemed like an odd combination for siblings to me.

AmyC86 · 12/11/2015 14:12

I have a second cousin called Khaleesi from the game of thrones.

however, her thick parents decided to go even more weird with a weird name and add another s and i so it spells Khaleessii. Her middle name is Florence, but again, those with low IQ spelt it with an a not an e = Florance.

Sad
00100001 · 12/11/2015 14:19

Khaleesi isn't even a name, it's title!

FattyNinjaOwl · 12/11/2015 14:24

No reason to call the parents thick though Confused its not something I would do but I wouldn't say only thick people do. Now it's becoming sneery.

NKFell · 12/11/2015 15:25

Egalite and I always wanted him to have siblings Liberte and Fraternite.

00100001 · 12/11/2015 19:18

True fatty

Lweji · 12/11/2015 19:26

She knows them. Maybe they are thick.

Tirfarthoin · 12/11/2015 19:40

My neighbours are Vernon and Kay

MamaLazarou · 12/11/2015 20:45

Pornpen Wannapong.

TeaAddict235 · 12/11/2015 21:05

Mysteri
Neon
Pepsi
Fanta (But I think that this actually means something sensible in another culture, so maybe it's not that odd)
