A thread on AIBU made me think that there are certain names I see getting a lot of love on MN but never hear in RL

Sylvie
Beatrix
Milo
Sebastien

There are loads more but I can't think? What other names are MN approved?

Apollo....

ApplesTheHare · 12/05/2015 18:40

Oh dear, I gave a RL Sylvie...!!! Blush

applecatchers36 · 12/05/2015 18:41

Cordelia

ApplesTheHare · 12/05/2015 18:41

*have

MadameJosephine · 12/05/2015 18:41

I had never heard of anybody called Ptolemy or Persephone until I came on MN

FelixFelix · 12/05/2015 18:44

I have a Sylvie middle name Beatrix Grin

MadameJosephine · 12/05/2015 18:45

I did actually consider Genevieve for DD but we couldn't agree how to pronounce it. We went for Jennifer instead but DS still calls her Genevieve pronounced the way he wanted it to be pronounced ( jon-vee-ev rather than jen-i-veev) it's become his pet name for her

Lunastarfish · 12/05/2015 18:45

Clara and Penelope seem to be the other common ones. I've never met any young children with these names and don't get me started on Sylvie!

tilder · 12/05/2015 18:45

I would say romilly too.

In fact, pretty much anything outside the top 100.

ApplesTheHare · 12/05/2015 18:45

high fives Felix

Rosieliveson · 12/05/2015 18:46

I see Ptolemy and Thaddeus on here fairly frequently but never in RL.
I do know one Sebastian and one Milo though.

LikeABadSethRogenMovie · 12/05/2015 18:47

I love reading the baby name board even though I last gave birth a decade ago. I bet that half the potential Ptolemy and Persephone's on here really end up being called James or Sophie et al though!

YouMakeMyHeartSmile · 12/05/2015 18:49

tilder I have a DD with an outside the top 100 name but it's still a pretty 'normal' name!

PrettyLittleMitty · 12/05/2015 18:49

Persephone, I have never heard this in rl yet it seems popular here.

ApplesTheHare · 12/05/2015 18:52

p.s. we chose Sylvie before I joined Mumsnet, if that helps. I had no idea it was a Mumsnet name, and actually am not sure it is. There are 3 Sylvies in our village that I know of.

avocadotoast · 12/05/2015 18:58

Ottilie. I'd never even heard of it until I came on here.

You do have to wonder whether some names just seem popular on here though (like, someone might like a name but not call their child it iyswim).

Nolim · 12/05/2015 19:00

I havent meet a single imogen in my life but it seems to be a popular choice in mn.

meditrina · 12/05/2015 19:01

I know someone who called his son Milo. Just before The Tweenies first aired.

MadameJosephine · 12/05/2015 19:04

Really nolim? We had Imogen on our list but didn't use it because it's so popular around here, I know at least 4 or 5 little girls named Imogen (maybe all my friends are secret mumsnetters?)

OnlyLovers · 12/05/2015 19:06

I know a Clara (baby) and have met Imogens aplenty.

Nolim · 12/05/2015 19:08

Really. Is imogen a name that came out of fashion and is back? Are there any famous imogens? Doesnt sound very traditional but i may be wrong.

MyNameIsSuz · 12/05/2015 19:10

Gabriel and Jude, always suggested on here but I've never met one. Well, I know a Jude, but she's a 40ish year old woman, not a little boy...

MyNameIsSuz · 12/05/2015 19:12

Oh and Anna. Not unusual in itself, but I don't know any tiny ones. Plenty of annabelles and hannahs but no annas.
