Stanhope

I'd be grateful on any views on Stanhope for a boy.

Currently expecting DC3. DH dismisses all my name suggestions and says, if it is a boy, it will be one of this three suggestions...

I'm very non-plussed about two of those and hate the third. Might be able to change his Stanley (nn Stan) to Stanhope, like the Newlyn artist.

I'm not usually a fan of surnamey-names and our other DC have more common names.

Thanks!

It instantly makes me think of Doug.

Who I love but definitely wouldn't name my child after!

hollie84 · 03/11/2014 20:57

Stanley is better than Stanhope.

Theresomethingaboutdairy · 03/11/2014 20:58

Awful, sorry! Stanley is ok. What are the other names?

BlackbirdOnTheWire · 03/11/2014 20:58

Isn't Stanhope a place?

I'd think you were doing a Beckham...

I might be totally wrong though!

Kerberos · 03/11/2014 20:59

Eek. No!

RunByFruiting · 03/11/2014 21:00

Doug was my first thought.

Don't like it (sorry)

Floralnomad · 03/11/2014 21:01

Stanhope is the name of what used to be a very rough estate in Ashford ,it's not a first name.

Chopsypie · 03/11/2014 21:03

It's a small town in north East England.

I think people will mispronounce it as well. Would you pronounce the hope or pronounce it stanhup?

As in 'stannup'?

A bit surnamey/street name for me.

loveableshoulder · 03/11/2014 21:11

Stanhope. A shitty part of Ashford. I wouldn't.

Lweji · 03/11/2014 21:13

No.

SmatteringOfPatois · 03/11/2014 21:14

nope, first saw it as stand pipe!!

ScrambledEggAndToast · 03/11/2014 21:14

Poor kid

OttiliaVonBCup · 03/11/2014 21:14

You need a number after it.
Stanhope the Third of Junior or something

howtodrainyourflagon · 03/11/2014 21:15

Stanley is a lovely name.

BooDidIScareYou · 03/11/2014 21:15

It makes me think of a town in Essex called Stanford-le-Hope. Or Stanford-no-Hope, as a friend who lived there often called it! Sorry OP!!

BikeRunSki · 03/11/2014 21:17

Town in Co Durham
Street in my village

Too place-namey

Never heard of Doug Stanhope.

Ludways · 03/11/2014 21:22

Town near me
Road in town
Name of my cat's vets

Love Stanley though.

BlueStarsAtNight · 03/11/2014 21:26

Awful sorry. Love Stanley though.

Castlemilk · 03/11/2014 21:39

Hmm if you don't like them, then no it WON'T be one of his three suggestions.

60sname · 03/11/2014 21:43

Reminds me of Stanmore, last Northbound stop on the Jubilee line ...

ShadowKat · 03/11/2014 21:44

I live far too close to a town called Stanhope to take it seriously as a possible baby name.

I have similar issues with Stanley though.

OscarWinningActress · 03/11/2014 21:45

Just Don't, OP.

Ludways · 03/11/2014 22:11

Shadowcat, I don't have the same thoughts on Stanley even though I know the town, I guess it's a more common name.
