What do you think? I am rather liking it, fits the Biblical trend but not popular yet, easy to spell, short.

Only problem is will people pronounce it Job as in 'Job interview' or how it should be said Jobe? I noticed more people spelled it Jobe recently but I hate the e, it looks wrong.

I'm not sure if you are acting thick Julia or being deliberately obtuse, but the traditional thing to do when looking for potential issues with names, is to look at what your average 9 year old (or 19 year old) little shit bully will do with it. That includes potential problems of mispronounciation, unfortunate spellings, rhymes etc.

We know how it's pronounced. We also know how it is written on a page. Which version do you think the dickhead making the blowjob and poo jokes is going to run with dear?

ACM88 · 24/07/2014 13:17

I would think arrested development, and it would make me laugh. No I'm not at all familiar with the religious story!!

I think it's a good name actually!

MultipleMama · 24/07/2014 13:31

They will be pronounced the same if a verbal or written pronouncation isn't given. Using a captial letter does not automatically turn a word into two different pronouncations.

Adding the 'e' would make it a much better and lower the risk of mispronouncation. IMO. As soon as the 'e' is on I recognised the name and pronouncation easily.

MultipleMama · 24/07/2014 13:33

How many times did I write pronouncation?! Now that word is starting to sound funny...

LindaMcCartneySausage · 24/07/2014 13:36

Frankly, it's terrible. Just....don't.

Job/Jobby/Joaby all = shit where I come from. As others have pointed out, Job in the Bible has a terrible time. And it will always be pronounced "job".

Bowlersarm · 24/07/2014 13:48

Quite agree julia. It's not job it's jobe.

And frankly mn seems obsessed with poo. I never understand it.

FidelineAndBombazine · 24/07/2014 14:38

The name board is obsessed with poo Bowlers because playground bullies are. Can't explain the rest of MN though Grin

scottishmummy · 24/07/2014 16:03

Yes bit it'll be pronounced job as in job centre. Not the jobe centre. op has acknowledged this
Op acknowledges straight off,job as in job centre.wasn't a protracted process to surmise this
And yes point of asking about name is query the likely mispronunciation, jibes etc

sandberry · 24/07/2014 16:23

I'm not put off. Infact defending job on this thread has turned a vague idea into a sure thing. I really like it now.

I expected some negative opinions but slightly amazed at the strength of feeling of the anti Job posters and also feel a bit sorry for Jacksoff can't be nice to hear so much negativity about your child's name. Still it is a simple classic name maybe ahead of the trend look at the stratospheric rise of Noah perhaps in 2030 there'll be a Job in every class

OP posts:
Everard · 24/07/2014 17:15

perhaps in 2030 there'll be a Job in every class

Given the universal poo connotation, am I the only one giggling like a schoolboy at this? Grin

gymboywalton · 24/07/2014 17:25

he will be eternally have people cracking jokes about shit and oral sex. especially when he is a teenager.
he WILL get called blowjob.

other people will make comments about him being unlucky.

this is a name where you really have to put aside your feelings about it being a nice name and think about the impact it will have on your child's life.

ShadowFall · 24/07/2014 17:42

Yes, but Noah, AFAIK, has no other meaning in English. It's not also used as a word (and yes, I know they're pronounced differently, but job and Job look identical when written).

Noah is just known as a name.

If you were talking about the stratospheric rise of Ham (or other biblical name where the written version is identical to a commonly used English word) as a name then you might have a decent argument about Job being ahead of the curve.

sandberry · 24/07/2014 17:57

Pretty miserable story though and a name that definitely attracted raised eyebrows and sniggers. Jonah also on the way up despite common associations of misery and Ned which has other connotations In parts of the UK.

I rather like Ham now you come to mention it.

OP posts:
FidelineAndBombazine · 24/07/2014 18:05

Ham has possiblities Smile

CaptainSinker · 24/07/2014 18:09

Have to disagree with posters who say the name Job is not pronounced like slang for shit. In West of Scotland "jobby" is the, well, posh pronunciation. Normal pronunciation for both shit and occupation is joab. Sort of Joe then a b sound.

ShadowFall · 24/07/2014 18:11

Agree that Jonah isn't a great name because of it's unlucky associations.

The biblical name that really gets me, though, is Cain. I just don't get why a parent would want to name a baby after the first murderer. But it's still a more popular name than Job. (This isn't a good thing, IMO)

scottishmummy · 24/07/2014 18:13

I don't think jackoff needs our sympathy anymore than you do
Sympathy is for sad significant life events, not a name choice
And id expect if posting on name thread, that one rolls with it,as you indeed have

gymboywalton · 24/07/2014 18:14

if you want a biblical name why go for something like james or simon or paul or peter or daniel or adam or benjamin-something nice that won't give the kid a lifetime of pisstaking?

scottishmummy · 24/07/2014 18:19

Oh christ alive dont pick ned,ned is like calling the wean chav

susiedaisy · 24/07/2014 18:23

I like it and know that it's pronounced jobe only because I went to Sunday school. I would however spell it with the e on the end to avoid confusion.

PrimalLass · 24/07/2014 18:30

Normal pronunciation for both shit and occupation is joab. Sort of Joe then a b sound.

Geez a joab.

sandberry · 24/07/2014 18:36

James is nice but no good story and I loathe Jamie
Paul is a misogynist,
Peter has bad personal associations
Simon I hate
Daniel is great with a good story but hate Danny
Adam is not a good role model and Benjamin has a rather pointless meaning 'son of the right hand' and isn't a strong character
and I don't really feel strongly about a Biblical name, I just like short, not too popular, my second choice would probably be Leo for the meaning but it is super popular. Job however is now way out in front.

It's London people will get over it, there are lots of less common names here. If he moves away he can be Joe, if he turns 18 and hates his name he can get a deed poll and call himself Oliver or James or he can go by his middle name. Thousands of kids hate their super popular names and at least I'll have a good meaningful story to tell him as to why I chose it.

OP posts:
FidelineAndBombazine · 24/07/2014 18:38

What about Boab (mention of sunday school has set me off Grin)?

I think he married Ruth. That's a good story

ScrambledEggAndToast · 24/07/2014 18:44

Dreadful

BoulevardOfBrokenSleep · 24/07/2014 18:44

Agree with curiousuze, the story of Job is bloody awful, God comes out of it looking like a petulent toddler who utterly destroys people's lives just for shits and giggles.
