Job

What do you think? I am rather liking it, fits the Biblical trend but not popular yet, easy to spell, short.

Only problem is will people pronounce it Job as in 'Job interview' or how it should be said Jobe? I noticed more people spelled it Jobe recently but I hate the e, it looks wrong.

I know it's pronounced differently, but written down its the same. And easy for kids to spell.

oh dear.

That is hilarious!

Checking the poo thing it seems to be pronounced like Job ie Job seeker, Job centre etc not like Job which is pronounced Jobe ie Joe with a b on the end and we live well down south so that should help.

I don't like Jude and if Job is a poor meaning, being named after the patron saint of lost causes would surely be worse! though thanks for all the suggestions and glad for a couple of positive comments, I was beginning to think there was near universal hatred for Job.

I like Job. Also like Joab.

I've never heard the term 'job' used for poo in London.

I think a lot of people will pronounce it as in "job interview". I think you'd need to change the spelling (i.e. Joab / Jobe) to avoid people pronouncing it wrong.

And I agree with the pp's who are put off the name because of all the troubles suffered by the biblical Job.

Job
As in jobbie
Oh no

That's so weird Onesleep. I'm from Manchester and have never heard it.

Report
Bowlersarm · 23/07/2014 20:18

No it's not job as in jobbie.

If you live in the south OP I don't think that it'll matter. I've never heard job referred to as a poo, nevermind that's not how it is pronounced.

I don't like strange spellings normally but I'd be tempted to use it with an e on the end. Or job on bc but inclined to use an e in everyday life.

Both jobby and Joaby are slang for shit in Scotland.

Also most people would pronounce Job like, well, job.

Report
scottishmummy · 23/07/2014 20:21

A life of correcting pronunciation if you pick job,as in job centre.it wont be jobe
And if you venture to scotland the jobbie or job centre will be the association
At a push itll be joab,as in get a joab doon the joab centre

How about Josiah, nn Jed? (especially if you're a fan of the West Wing)

Report
fanjobiscuits · 23/07/2014 20:24

I wouldn't want it as a name because Job isn't a very happy story really.

That is weird. I'm originally from Bolton, lived in Manc in the mid 80's and have known it all my life.

Tbh it also makes me think of blow job. Blush

There's a puppet on that doctor programme on cbeebies - dr ranj. He's called Joby. The first time I saw it, I was Shock because of jobbie.
Sorry.
How about Toby?
If you go with Job, I think you should spell it Jobe or Joab but then you might upset some religious pedants! I think there's a lot of people unfamiliar with the bible who really won't have a clue how to pronounce it.

Report
sandberry · 23/07/2014 20:44

I really don't like the e, Jobe just looks wrong but it is an option.
Joab is a different name and the meaning is lost. I would pronounced Joab- Joe ab not Jobe.

Born, live and probably will die in London, so Job may be mispronounced but not likely to be associated with shit. If he went up North he could always go by Joe or add the e.

Can always test people's cultural literacy by their pronunciation Wink

Its nothing to do with culturally literacy, what a patronising thing to say
Picking a name likely to be mispronounced doesn't make you culturally literate
Proceed with job,if you want but it'll not be pronounced joab

Bowlersarm · 23/07/2014 20:52

Of course it will be pronounced correctly, because that's how he will be introduced.

Job is awful. And not an easy name to live with.

It's very unlikely to be pronounced correctly too. An Irish friend at college had her name pronounced incorrectly constantly,no matter how often she told people how to say it. I'd expect the same to be true of Job.

Report
sandberry · 23/07/2014 20:56

Hmm maybe not cultural literacy then perhaps biblical literacy, after all there is no such name as Job in job centre (though to be fair I pronounced it like that for years and thought it was an awful name so call me culturally/biblically illiterate)

I don't want it pronounced Joab although perhaps Joab in some accents would sound like Jobe, to me it would be Joe-ab and I know Job would be pronounced Job as in Job centre by most people, I'm just having a hard time letting go of it. Short, biblical, perfect name except for universal dislike here (and probably in the real world too)

It only needs correcting once at nursery etc.

And if the OP goes for it, she'll no doubt ensure his teacher etc knows how to pronounce it from the outset.

There are thousands of people out in the world who have to correct people misspelling thier name or saying it wrong. You correct them once, they get it, mistake is usually not made again.

If you love the name OP, and the spelling, then you go for it. I think it's lovely that you care so much for keeping the original spelling to hold onto the meaning of it.

Report
scottishmummy · 23/07/2014 20:59

Nonetheless it'll be job,as its commonly by sight job,not joab
As anyone with a mispronounced name will tell you, even correcting it doesn't always work
And as i said,on lists,receiving calls,invites it'll habitually require correcting,no its joab

I'm not convinced mn is a true reflection of anything in RL. Little I see on here is relevant to my RL.

However as it seems to cause controversy, try sounding it out with people you know.
