Does everyone think the spelling of my chosen name is odd??

Hubby and I just found out we are expecting a little girl.

We have chosen the name Sofee but everyone thinks we should spell it a more traditional way.

Am I just being weird??

Thanks for info regarding Alys
You learn something new everyday

Madamecastafiore · 06/06/2014 06:46

Why in God's name would you do this.

It doesn't even say Sophie phonetically.

If you like the name Sophie just call the kid Sophie.

Rideronthestorm · 06/06/2014 06:48

It would be silly to misspell Sophie. Knowing what children can be like she will be teased at school when the other children realise.

Just daft.

RonaldMcDonald · 06/06/2014 06:49

Yes, it is ridiculous

BobPatandIgglePiggle · 06/06/2014 06:53

I've taught a Summa, two boys both called Jak, a Loydd, a Jordin, a Danyel and an Ammey.

They all wished their parents had spelt the names the 'normal' way.

KaFayOLay · 06/06/2014 06:54

I think that spelling makes it quite 'hard' where the name Sophie is a 'soft' name, if you see what I mean.

I'd think again on the spelling, it just looks wrong and she will forever be seen as chavvy.

manicinsomniac · 06/06/2014 11:01

The OP has only put one f in it so I would say Soh-fee (like sofa) rather than soff -ee (to rhyme with toffee).

I don't think it's a good idea though. I have come across Sophy and Sofie. But not Sofee.

thegreylady · 06/06/2014 11:03

Nope looks like Sofa. If you want Sophie spell it properly otherwise people will judge I promise. I hate silly made up spellings of names.

ouryve · 06/06/2014 11:06

I'd think you were on a wind up.

Awful - it's a pretty name - don't bugger it up.

Helpys · 06/06/2014 11:21

Blimey this is really nasty.
Hmm

LineRunner · 06/06/2014 11:21

OP's gone so I'm assuming it's a wind-up.

BrunoBrookesDinedAlone · 06/06/2014 11:31

Wind them up and watch them go, OP!!

Viviennemary · 06/06/2014 11:35

Quite. Should I call my child x. No it sounds awful. Oh you nasty lot!!!!!

Helpys · 06/06/2014 11:56

OK I'll bite.
OP is a long standing poster and has loads of threads about the pregnancy- the most recent about how excited and nervous she was about going to the scan yesterday.
I imagine she's feeling pretty belittled.
Really, if there's a strong consensus on a thread, with no response from the OP, why on earth would you rock up to put the boot in.
Nasty

TiggyD · 06/06/2014 12:29

This is why I'd like to see a poll option on some threads. It would have been nicer to vote 100 to 1 against the name than have 100 people say it's crap.

Viviennemary · 06/06/2014 12:29

A lot of people on MN don't like bizarre spellings of names. So if you ask the same question you can expect the same answer. But in the end people can call their DC's whatever they wish within reason. So I can't see what the fuss is about.

looki · 06/06/2014 19:14

The spelling isn't odd, it's wrong.

Why do you want to deliberately misspell a name? If you don't want a common/popular name, I think you need to choose another name rather than make up your own spelling.

I know someone who spelled her daughters name in a similar fashion - think Poppy spelled Poppee. She constantly complains people spell it incorrectly. Meanwhile everyone thinks she used a ridiculous spelling and it has raised quite a few eyebrows and sniggers.

luluskiptotheloo · 06/06/2014 19:20

I knew a girl called Phoebe, her parents spelt it Feebee!

doziedoozie · 07/06/2014 09:18

But why would you come onto MN and ask if you were happy with your choice of name (and its spelling).

The OP still has the choice, people choose all sorts for names these days, I would never comment IRL, mind you my expression would probably be enough, but no one ever asks my opinion anyway sensibly

Viviennemary · 07/06/2014 11:29

I wouldn't comment on a name in real life even if it was total dreadful. I'd just smile and say how nice. But on MN people can get a realistic opinion.

ohthegoats · 07/06/2014 14:10

Sofee is the brand name of a type of toffee. IMO.

MrsRuffdiamond · 07/06/2014 14:19

Is it France which has a list of 'allowed' names?

Alisvolatpropiis · 07/06/2014 14:39

A few countries have allowed names lists, including France it's - Germany, Norway, Sweden, Japan, China, Iceland and New Zealand.

They're not massively restrictive and may actually have a point.
