Does everyone think the spelling of my chosen name is odd??

Hubby and I just found out we are expecting a little girl.

We have chosen the name Sofee but everyone thinks we should spell it a more traditional way.

Am I just being weird??

You (and by extension Sofee) will come across as
total thickys

It isn't spelling it differently. It's spelling it incorrectly!

Mixture of sofa and settee... Was she conceived in the living room? Grin

Definitely not sofee! Even my autocorrect wants to change it!

I know of an Alfey instead of Alfie- I think that's kinda wankish

Maybe just do Sophie with a "y" on the end if you're going for a different spelling, so Sophy. That still looks nice, I think. Sofee, quite frankly, just looks stupid and dare I say, chavvy.

Don't do it!. I hate it when people make up spellings just to be different.

I know an Amy - spelt Aiymee. I kid you not.

Just spell it the normal way otherwise she will spend her life saying it's "Sophie, spelled S-o-f-e-e"

For her sake, if nothing else, I've never understood why people take normal names and give them silly different spellings

Sofee is not pronounced Sophie so it's a completely different name imo.

With my dialect I would pronounce it

SOFFF E

Sofie I think you can get away with - she'll still have to keep spelling it but I think some other countries use that spelling.

Sofee to me looks like it should be pronounced saw-fee

It makes me think of a child misspelling a friends name on an invite "dear sofee please come to my party..."

Report
Tranquilitybaby · 05/06/2014 22:27

No sorry, it will never be spelt correctly by others and will be questioned throughout her life.

I met an Alys
I really do not see the point- trying too hard to be different?

Report
tallulah · 05/06/2014 22:45

Actually Alys is the original spelling.

Report
slithytove · 05/06/2014 23:04

Yeah, Alys is welsh isn't it?

Report
Alisvolatpropiis · 05/06/2014 23:06

As others have said, Alys is Welsh and an older spelling of the name than Alys.

Report
Alisvolatpropiis · 05/06/2014 23:06

*older than Alice even Hmm

Report
HaroldLloyd · 05/06/2014 23:11

Alys is a totally legitimate spelling.

This thread is getting very whiffy.

Or whiffeeee whatever.

I've known a Sophy and that was just different enough to be interesting without getting too silly. I agree that Sofee makes you look embarrassingly illiterate, which would be very ironic given that the name means Wisdom. She would not thank you for giving her such a weird spelling. Sofia would be reasonable.

Report
Alita7 · 05/06/2014 23:45

I'd advise against it. She won't thank you for it.

And to me it either looks like It should be spelt Soffy or so feeeeeeee. bad idea.

If I saw a child called Sofee, I would pronounce it so-feee (more if an emphasis on the fee part)
