Does everyone think the spelling of my chosen name is odd??

Hubby and I just found out we are expecting a little girl.

We have chosen the name Sofee but everyone thinks we should spell it a more traditional way.

Am I just being weird??

I would laugh inwardly if i ever saw that spelling. What is wrong with 'Sophie'?

Bahahahahahaha
you are joking right?

(is what everyone will be thinking)

It makes me think of toffee, and sofa.

If you like unusual names (I do!) then pick one! Dont just mis-spell a common one.

What's wrong with the proper spelling? Confused. If you like being a bit "different", express it in some other way, ffs.

littlegreengloworm · 05/06/2014 12:13

Oh my goodness, don't spell it that way, she will hate it

I would assume that you and your H were very very very stupid.

And I would feel sorry for poor wee Sofeeeeeeee.

SnakeyMcBadass · 05/06/2014 12:14

Um. No. Not a great spelling.

MissBattleaxe · 05/06/2014 12:15

Please don't do it. If you want to be different, give her an unusual middle name, but please don't try and be special or different by giving your daughter a crappy phonetically spelled name. Sophie is gorgeous. Sofee will cause years and years of eye rolling and tutting.

Sofee is utterly dreadful.

Ha! Spotty, I also have a normal surname that can be spelt two different ways. I have the more normal spelling, but still have to confirm every time.

Honestly, OP, it will be a pain for her.

Unless you have a good reason for wanting this spelling, like naming her after someone spelt that way, of if it's a usual spelling somewhere that is important to you, just don't do it.

Is this a joke?

Report
SweepTheHalls · 05/06/2014 12:16

Please don't do that to her. A lovely name when spelt properly.

Report
buggerboooo · 05/06/2014 12:16

Yes its terrible and makes you look quite thick.

Report
SweepTheHalls · 05/06/2014 12:17

Or is that spelled?!

Report
badgerknowsbest · 05/06/2014 12:17

Sofee makes me think of a made up word for sofa and settee.

Report
crazykat · 05/06/2014 12:18

Its a lovely name but please spell it Sophie. Its your choice but Sofee just looks like you can't spell.

I also hate when traditional names are given 'unique' spellings. Its also a pita when you have to keep correcting people when filling in forms etc.

I have a traditional name with at least half a dozen traditional spellings depending on region/country. I have one of the more unusual spellings (for England) and it has always driven me nuts having to correct the spelling.

Along with most of the posters here, it would make me think you were illiterate. However it is completely your choice if that is the impression you want to give.

fledermaus · 05/06/2014 12:20

Sofee is a bit odd, but Sofie is a legitimate spelling I think.

Report
angelos02 · 05/06/2014 12:20

I would expect it to be pronounced SOh Fee
In that the Soh part rhymed with the o in Hop

Report
nannyplum75 · 05/06/2014 12:20

surely this is a wind-up?

Report
dinkystinky · 05/06/2014 12:21

Not a good way to spell it. Sofie is a legitimate variation on the spelling - Sofee is not.

Itsfab · 05/06/2014 12:23

I am 42 and have had to spell both my names the whole of my life and I am sick of it. And all the names are the correct spellings.

Please don't do it. It looks awful and I would judge you as thinking you were cool, edgy and unique when actually you would just look stupid.

DS was in a class with a girl called Lilie. That was her parents' "unique" spelling of Lily.

A Lily is a flower. To me, Lilie looks like you should say Lie-lee.

Sofee would be mis-pronounced as So-fee with a short o if you know what I mean. I'm not sure of your reasoning behind incorrectly spelling a name on purpose Confused

My RL name is an oddly spelt version of a 'real' name. I HATE IT!!! I cannot emphasise enough how ANNOYING it is! And yes, I could get my name changed by deed poll or however you do it, but I didn't even realise I could do that until I was post 18, had A level certificates in that name, enrolled to uni.... There has never been a convenient time to change it and it would just confuse all the people who do know it EVEN MORE! At least I am lucky because my name can be shortened to a nn so I only have to use my ridiculous 'real' name for official things, which is the reason why I never changed it. Probably if I'd been unlucky enough to be called 'Sofee' I would have bit the bullet and done it.

This is not just your baby this is a real person who has to grow up, go to job interviews, get professional certificates.....please please PLEASE do not do this to her!!! I only hope, if you do, that she grows up more tolerant if it than me. It is still a big bugbear/issue between me and DM (who still doesn't see a problem, geeesh, but then she's disappointed I grew up to be an accountant and not a hippy). You can't choose the personality of your kids, what if your kid is quiet/anxious/gets bullied, your name is a big part of who you are.

I agree with the people saying if you want the name to be different, please please use an actual name that is different / uncommon. Not a misspelling of a common name.
