Does everyone think the spelling of my chosen name is odd??

Hubby and I just found out we are expecting a little girl.

We have chosen the name Sofee but everyone thinks we should spell it a more traditional way.

Am I just being weird??

Depends on why youve chosen to spell it that way

(1) cultural, ie its spelt Sofee in your home country (in which case I would think you daft until I knew the reasoning)
(2) to be different. In which case Id think you were daft.

I know someone who has an Annee. Why? What is the purpose?

If you want something rare or different, dont bastardize a top ten name.

Sorry, I agree with everyone else. It does look like you just don't know how to spell Sophie, and it is quite reminiscent of sofa.
You are being a bit weird ( to answer your question).
It is not a pretty looking spelling either.

Obviously a joke thread.

Although I usually agree with 'your child, your choice' I think naming a child is a huge responsibility and you have to consider whether your child will like having a name that everyone else assumes is spelt a different way and be confident that they will feel comfortable with that - after all they will have to live with it and not you.

There is a child at my dd's school who has the name Aimee which is the French Amy and I personally like that but you do have to really consider carefully with different spellings IMO.

It's a stupid spelling. It wouldn't be pronounced as Sophie either.

CoteDAzur · 05/06/2014 13:53

French Aimée is not pronounced Any, though.

Naff.

Sorry.

It looks like it's pronounced 'Soh Fee'. Not 'So fee' as intended.

I also agree that:

It makes you look a bit dim and try hard
She will have to spell her name for every single person she meets and it would get old
She will never get birthday cards, magnets, other random crap with her name on it
If it's read before it's heard, I think it will be pronounced wrong
Also reminds me of a sofa.

What is wrong with Sophie or Sofie? (Still don't love the latter btw)

But this thread has inspired me, I want to call Dd2 Olivia, but it's just too popular.

So now I'm thinking, ohlyvya

Good right

It looks like it's provinces like Softy but without the T.

It's just... Awful.

Sorry Blush

Clearly a wind up thread!

Would it be odd to spell chair as c-h-a-r-e? Of course it would, it's wrong!

If you are serious op then do not use an incorrect spelling of a perfectly nice name or people will definitely judge you!

How do you spell Paris if not spelled Paris? Confused We must know!

Report
defineme · 05/06/2014 14:05

I have worked with many children with unconventionally spelt names and usually the parents were illiterate. A statement about my experience, not a judgement. I really don't think that it's the end of the world because children make names their own and language is always changing.
I did shout 'but it's a vegetable' at the TV when a woman on one born every minute called her child Kale because it was different and she'd never heard of it before, but really what does it matter what I think?

Someone has probably said that Sophie is pronounced SO fi whereas Sofee would So FEE, surely.

Unfortunately, it sounds like a cross between 'settee' and 'sofa'! She may grow up to be a 'couch' potato! (Sorry - couldn't resist the lame joke.) If you prefer to use an 'f' in the name, the Italians spell Sophia as Sofia - so you could get away with Sofie, I would think.

With regards to being a hassle "it's name with a...", there are lots of conventional spellings like that (Kathy/Cathy, Stephen/Steven, Ann/Anne, Clare/Claire Christine/Kristine etc'). I don't think it looks that nice written on the page though IYSWIM - more like a surname, not a 1st name.

squizita · 05/06/2014 14:23

...Oh and for the 'right/wrong' PPs - Will Shakespeare varied the spelling of his own name several times.

Proper nouns aren't tied to fixed spellings by their nature: until the person/place the noun is affixed to is completed/named, spelling is moot. Each name is a new word in that regard.

Doesn't mean some spellings aren't clunkier than others though: if anything, all the more reason for them to scan smoothly and neatly.

Don't do it...

DD and I were talking about names yesterday - she is at the old end of what is now a common girls name, her name is spelt in a standard but less common way,as the name has several different versions.

She (now 19!)was being sad that when she was little she couldn't ever get personalised gifts with her actual proper name on (like the pens/keyrings/things to go on doors etc etc etc)
No big deal really - but its obviously made an impression on DD!

But it's not just "with an f" or "ending in e"

It's completely different to all other versions.

I wish OP would come back if only to reassure us she won't be spelling it 'sofee' (yep, totally sounds like toffee in my head)

HavannaSlife · 05/06/2014 14:33

I'm not keen on the spelling, agree it looks like a cross between sofa and settee. It just doesn't look right.

I'm also really wanting to know the Paris spelling
