Finding it really hard to pick a boys name, I've got a little boy called Louie and thinking of Jayden for this one could be shortend to J or middle name will be Joseph as that's my dads name so Jayden Joseph could also be JJ. Honest opinions please :)

Jay Gatsby was v rich

Onesleeptillwembley · 01/06/2014 10:35

Only MC people hate it? What a sweeping generalisation.

Onesleeptillwembley · 01/06/2014 10:37

And to be fair, a new poster coming on asking about a very contentious name has sparked an interesting debate. Funny, that.

Clarabum · 01/06/2014 10:38

Love Joseph, hate Jayden or Kayden. Louie is a fantastic name.

Deverethemuzzler · 01/06/2014 10:41

Spero I am really shocked at your post.

Of course there are children called Jaidon in care. My son was one of them.
But common sense would tell you that a. they are not removed into care because they are called Jayden/Jaidan and b. they are far outnumbered by the amount of children called Jayden/jaaaaydene who are not removed into care.

In fact in my borough you would find that the majority of children in care have traditional names or names from non uk cultural backgrounds.

How innapropriate would it be for me to jump on a baby name thread about a Joshua to point out how many Joshuas (for eg) I have seen who are in FC. People would think I was nuts

This jaiden hating is simply not funny on MN.

It is indicative of a very worrying undercurrent of prejudice. A prejudice that is deemed acceptable in a way that others are not.

It is short hand for sneering at the working classes.

TheSarcasticFringehead · 01/06/2014 10:50

I like JJ. Not a fan of Jayden, but I like Kaiden? Although that would mess up the JJ thing. Jayden DOES flow well with Joseph though, which I like.

RandallFloyd · 01/06/2014 10:51

According to MN my DS's name is both 'chavvy' and 'toff'.
It's one of my proudest moments.

Poor kid's CV will have to have a pile all of its own.

Clarabum · 01/06/2014 10:54

I'm very working class but I still don't like the name Jayden. For me it's like calling your child Chanelle. It's just personal preference. To be honest, it sounds made up.

beatingwings · 01/06/2014 11:03

I hate it and agree with everything that Spero has said.

Good post Antonius and I agree with it all.

Again, I am not and have never said children are taken into care because they are called a certain name.

Therefore I can't apologise for shocking or upsetting people when they decide to be shocked or upset about views I do not hold and have not expressed.

But why mention care proceedings at all?

Really?

If we pulled out the stats on care proceedings over the last 60 years I am willing to bet big money that Jaydon would not be in the top ten.

Charles, Tony, Karen, Harry, Jasmine, Peter, Victoria, Joseph, Joshua, Conner, Sophie, Sarah, Rave, Donte, Ebony, Oliva, Jazz, Tommy

would all be there. Some of those names are totally 'timeless' and middle class.

I wouldn't go on any baby names thread and say 'there are kids in care called Jamie, so bear that in mind'.

I have been in care and neither my name or my brothers' names are along the lines of Jayden. They aren't stereotypical middle class or anything either, they're fairly average names which anyone from most classes could probably be called. Confused

Spero · 01/06/2014 14:13

I do not think poor people have shit names and don't care for their children.

That is so far from what I have said at it is becoming ridiculous.

I have explained why I react in a certain way to certain names. People have responded with all sorts of nonsense, which does make me doubt their reading comprehension levels, such as I think everyone wants to be middle class or everyone called Jayden is shit.

If you could actually be bothered to read what I wrote, I do not see how anyone could honestly come to those conclusions.

I can only assume therefore that some people are bored and it's much more fun to try and pile in on an argument I never made to express righteous indignation about things I never said.

If you enjoy that, knock yourselves out. But don't expect me to respect your position when it is so demonstrably dishonest and unfair.

FidelineandFumblin · 01/06/2014 14:14

I think what Spero said was fairly clear. Are some people deliberately misunderstanding her?

FidelineandFumblin · 01/06/2014 14:15

What a bloody silly question Fid. Of course they were.

Spero · 01/06/2014 14:17

Surely not? But I thought the internet was a place full of reasoned and honest dialogue where people could share their views without being accused of all sorts of hysterical crap!

LBNM19 · 01/06/2014 14:18

Are you really saying a child called Jayden is more likely to end up in care, I think that is absolutely ridiculous, I come from a middle class family and no child of mine will end up in care regardless of there name, my son is very well looked after has everything he wants/needs and we are certainly not poor, not that that would matter anyway.

So goes to show really the stereotypes are not right.

Jaygo TERRIBLE!

I don't think you can compare Jayden to Chanelle, come on !

MajorMassSpecsMrs · 01/06/2014 14:19

Maybe if there weren't so many judgy cunts saying 'oh dear lord, Jaydon? How common' than more MC people would choose it, thus evening up the ratio of Jaydons between the WC and MC.

Spero · 01/06/2014 14:22

Sigh.

Ok. One more time.

The name Jayden has certain connotations. It is not a name routinely embraced by the middle classes.

I see that from my experience of working with and living with some very poor and disadvantaged people, amongst whom my daughter was educated for three years.

So I know a little about what I speak.

If anyone can point me to anywhere where I have stated that being called Jayden means you will end up in care, or that I think all poor people should be executed or I like sneering at people having miserable times, please do alert me.

I suppose it's just possible I got very drunk or fell and hit my head in the last few hours and have been posting in a random way.

Side effect of your removed from reality, ivory tower job i imagine Spero
