Finding it really hard to pick a boys name, I've got a little boy called Louie and thinking of Jayden for this one could be shortend to J or middle name will be Joseph as that's my dads name so Jayden Joseph could also be JJ. Honest opinions please :)

But everyone has to alter their behaviour to some extent in order to get through life. If you have a job interview, you dress smartly and answer politely. If you're in church, you bow your head and stay silent when praying. If you're at Ascot, you shout loudly when your horse is racing. If you meet the Queen, you address her as Ma'am and curtsey.

Of course, you could ignore all of the above - turn up to an interview in a tracksuit, chew gum and swear, or talk through a church service, but you'd hardly get on in life.

It shouldn't have to be outlawed, Fideline.Did I really have to say that? Is it ok to discriminate against people who are working class just because a law hasn't been passed against it.

Of course I didn't say it is okay!! Did I really have to say THAT?

You think everyone will just stop being prejudiced? Just wake up in a state of enlightenment?

CoteDAzur · 02/06/2014 17:37

"People are twats and judge people based on one experience with the name. So the answer to that is to advise anyone who likes the name to avoid it?"

Err... yes.

Except it is not "one experience with the name". It is the general perception of the name.

You might like the name Chardonnay, for example, but I'd certainly hope that someone would let you know how that name will mark your DD before you burden her with it.

RabbitSaysWoof · 02/06/2014 17:39

Feckled I see what your saying, but the difference to me is that when you leave your job interview you can change your clothes, you can leave a church service and have fun afterwards.
Your name is your name you take it everywhere at all times forever it should be who you are.

thelittleonesaid · 02/06/2014 17:40

Why do some people assume that everyone wants to be 'middle class', like middle class people are some kind of gods that we should all aspire to be like Hmm

CoteDAzur · 02/06/2014 17:41

"I look forward to anyone wanting to call their child Mohammed being told that it will limited their job prospects"

Here you go:

It will limit their job prospects and make his life difficult while boarding planes ("random" search, they call it Hmm) and crossing borders.

HTH.

FidelineandFumblin · 02/06/2014 17:42

.....because Maryz people didn't stop racist and sexist and sectarian hiring practices just to be nice - they did it because they were forced to by equality legislation.

JohnFarleysRuskin · 02/06/2014 17:44

I just don't believe that a person who has an impeccable CV in front of them would just throw it in the bin because its the 'wrong' name. I would like real life examples of this, because the Sharon's and Tracey's of my acquaintance are doing very well.

DD has a posh name - with connotations of the U/C - ha ha. However, her CV presumably will have her address and her (state) education on it, which will be a give away that she is not...What then? Will her C be chucked in the bin too?

JohnFarleysRuskin · 02/06/2014 17:44

CV?

FidelineandFumblin · 02/06/2014 17:48

Maryz please come back and explain what it was that you think I just said.

CoteDAzur · 02/06/2014 17:50

Given two or more impeccable CVs, employers tend to choose John over Jayden. This is fact.

What you decide to do with that fact is up to you.

KatieKaye · 02/06/2014 17:57

Jayden isn't a name I like much, BUT I think Jayden Joseph go well together and I have no difficulty in imaging a Judge Jayden.

HTH

RabbitSaysWoof · 02/06/2014 18:00

I would hope an employer would interview John and Jayden, its not all about paperwork.
Two people can never exactly match in person seriously I'd be interested to find out two candidates are exactly the same after meeting.

FidelineandFumblin · 02/06/2014 18:02

Rabbit It's often a case of 100+ CVs and 8 interview slots though.

DS has no chance. Not a Jayden but he has a marmite name.

FidelineandFumblin · 02/06/2014 18:14

usual how are you sustaining the pitch of outrage for so long?

fledermaus · 02/06/2014 18:15

There are teachers called Darren, solicitors called Darren, film directors, sportsmen, even a newsreader Grin How have they managed without being called Simon?

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 02/06/2014 18:16

We have a GP at our surgery called Tracey.

A name does not define a person, the person defines the name.

ChocolateWombat · 02/06/2014 18:18

Everyone is free to choose the name they give their child. Of course they are. However, it is naieve (sp?) to think that names don't have class connotations.

People who don't like Jayden are not saying working class is wrong or everyone should aspire to be middle class or have middle class names. They are simply saying that many names have class connotations. It doesn't matter if this is wrong or right, or if you like it or not, it is just a FACT.
For many people, this is neither here nor there and they will choose a name they like. Incidentally what people like is often influenced by the class of the parents anyway. We all tend to stick with the kinds of things we are familiar with.
Some people go out of their way to have a name which is different or has class connotations. Most people don't go as far as this, Althought hey maybe unwittingly influenced by class connotations.

So if the OP likes Jayden she should choose it.
Personally I would always be aware of names with strong class connotations or of the moment which will date.....but that is just me.

FidelineandFumblin · 02/06/2014 18:22

How about we outlaw connotations? All of them? Posh, WC, MC, Ethnic, Religious.

Five years for possession, ten for dealing.
