Chambers dictionary: "Dolly - see Dorothy", "Dorothy, Dorothea, diminutives Dolly, Dora, Dorrie, Do, Dot, Dottie", "Dolores (Sp) sorrows, diminutives Lola, Lolita."

sonlypuppyfat · 04/05/2014 18:02

Nobody said that they wasn't lovely children of course they are. It's just that there parents have lumbered them with daft names.

Lannypanny123 · 04/05/2014 18:08

Megrim what is your point? So both name can come from Dorothy so?
She ISN'T called Dorothy I don't think ever in her whole life when she tells anyone her name are they going to say ohhhh Dolly Dot is that short for Dorothy Dorothy?

They my of originally been NN for the name but they can be names in there own right too

I can't believe a few a little bit different kids name could course such a stir and get people's knickers in such a twist uses want to start living a little lol

Precisely Lanny! Dolly Dot is completely different from Dorothy x2.

Prefer Queenie to Bunty as kids will surely find something mean to rhyme with the latter, which is unfortunate as I love Bunty.

I know a thirty year old Elizabeth who likes to be known as Queenie.

AMI88 · 04/05/2014 18:32

I absolutely love dolly dot and would pinch that off you (with permission) if it went with our surname!

I do like bunty- but agree the unfortunate foul swear word would make for opportune rhyming :(

I also like Buster, in fact my grandad used to call my brother buster when he was young, don't quite know why, it's not anything like his actual name!! Maybe it was the comic!?

TequilaMockingbirdy · 04/05/2014 18:35

Buster-boo is his first name? Jesus christ.

I love your individuality OP, but I just think about what other people think in regards to bullying, job prospects etc.

Megrim · 04/05/2014 19:00

Well, I guess I'm just a bit old-fashioned in thinking that diminutives are just that, ie a shortened name rather than a name in its own right. And yes, I did put the full names on my DC's birth certificates so that they could choose themselves whether they wanted to use their full name or the diminutive.

And it was in reply to a post up thread mentioning that Dolly was short for Dolores.

squoosh · 04/05/2014 19:04

Of course diminutives are names in their own right. Ask the millions of Jacks and Mollys.

AWombWithoutARoof · 04/05/2014 19:19

I love pretty much all of Mrs DV's names.

OP, can I be nosey ask why Buster-Boo is hyphenated and your other children aren't?

I love Biba, does it have a source beyond the fashion label? I'd put Greer as the middle name.

I picture a Queenie as being an East End matriarch who runs a pub with a fist of iron circa 1880.

Nononon · 04/05/2014 19:45

I haven't read the whole thread but I'd just like to say to the OP - great names!

And to those that say that children get bullied for their names - I am teacher and have never once seen a child being bullied for their name. Not once. I teach secondary too. Names become 'normal' to other children. Names also don't hold children back.

It's just narrow minded adults that have the issue. A few of which are on this thread. These aren't exactly crazy, made up, "out there" names! They're just not top 100 at the moment. Get over it!

TakeMeUpTheNorthMountain · 04/05/2014 19:45

Listen, name your kids what you want. I just wanted to say Kitty kitty wee-smell made me laugh out loud like a eejit!! That is the first time in 7 yrs here something did that!

Sorry!

Posy Blossom

Buddy Beau

I recently took my daughter to a Doctor called Barbie...... Wasn't really bothered by her name!

FiscalCliffRocksThisTown · 04/05/2014 21:10

The Dolly Dots were a band in the 80s

I like it when kids have unusual names, don't think ang of OP names are "too out there"

How about

Caspian
Fabian
Valentino
Romano

Bit different from your other names, but original (ish) strong stand out names?

chocchips · 04/05/2014 21:19

Nononon, I'm sorry but children do get picked on because of their names. I was teased relentlessly because my name was different to all the others (amd its not even totally out there).

Saying that I dont find Dolly, Monty, Herbie or Buster too unusual. Not to my taste but certainly not silly. The hyphonated boo is the only thing that would raise my eyebrow (probably because I'd expect to find boo on a girl) but i think the OPs children will be just fine :)

Lannypanny123 · 04/05/2014 23:02

I hyphonated Buster-Boo because I intended for him to be known as Boo but he has the choice of Buster if he likes, I myself only call him Boo my nan only calls him Buster he dosnt bat an eyelid just answers to both single or together,

Never once has any of them ever told me they have been bullied because of there names one of my boys as long hair (his choice) and that's the very first thing that gets said not his name because I don't even think the other kids realise its different,

I'm loving posy too

Dolly Dot and Posy Pop
I would be having some of the MN mums having kittens lol

Think I need to write a new list and link some names up together thanks for some loverly ideas from some xxx

Openupyoureyes · 05/05/2014 08:34

Awomb Biba (the fashion label) was started by Barbara Hulanicki. Biba was her nickname.

chocchips · 05/05/2014 08:51

Lanny I didn't mean your children will be bullied ny their names (I don't think any but boo are 'out there') but that it was unfair for nononon to imply it doesn't happen because it does and it happened to me.

Fwiw I genuinely love Dolly though not brave enough to use it lol.
