I'm most of uses MN worse nightmares when it comes to baby names. I understand almost 100% won't like my childrens names and I really don't mind I quite like it in fact that way I know they won't become popular.

I'm pregnant with baby number 5 and looking for help to find a name for ether sex, I've l

Lanny - that's exactly why dolly dot is like Dorothy Dorothy. They are both nicknames from the same name.

Using your examples it's like having Millie Mildred or Harry Harold etc. Harry is usually from Henry btw, so naming child Henry Harry would get a few looks also.

Alexa Lexie - just Alexandra shortened differently twice

flavourflave · 04/05/2014 08:25

What's wrong with Dorothy Dorothy anyway?! No one heard of Boutros Boutros?!

Yes, Dolly and Dot are diminutives but are also completely different words and most importantly flow together nicely.

The name you give your child does reflect the parent's tastes. How can it not? If the child has a problem with this then they can change it! Unofficially that is! I grew up in London school and there were some great, exotic names about rubbing alongside the classics. No problems as far as I could see. Only when the name was somehow lost in translation and phonetically sounded like a rude word but people soon got bored of babyish comments if there were any.

Dinosaursdontgrowontrees · 04/05/2014 09:52

I can not believe how rude people have been on this thread. Op's children already have these names, names she loves. She has not asked for any opinions on her existing children's names and only mentioned them to give us an idea of the sort of names she likes for her next baby. Not for us to judge them. It is none of our business.
Good luck op. Hope you find the perfect name.

MrsDV I love your DCs names. You may name my next child!

Lannypanny123 · 04/05/2014 10:26

Thanks for some of the really nice comments I knew my names wouldn't be up to some of MN standards I've read hundreds if threads before posting for the first time and its seems if your names don't tick certain boxes there not MN worthy,

I understand there not going to be everyone taste like I have said before I like that fact but people are just plain rude, there a diffrance,

I was in hospital just given birth to monty and a lady across the ward had given birth to twins she felt the need to mock my newborn babies name, when she had name her boy and girl Rebecca and Daniel I don't dislike theses names but there simply not my taste (there are some top names I love like poppy & jack) but I would never of slated her choices but other people think its acceptable to do so.

I'm loving Bunty what could also get the NN bun I'm sure it's a little boy so need to narrow down a few more boys names

I do t think Monty is unusual at all. Have taught two in my primary school over recent years.

Dolly and Herb are not overly unusual too.

Buster is more unusual but I bet it isn't in America or Australia for example.

But then I work in an infant school with children from many different backgrounds, coming from many different countries across the world. More unusual names really cause no issue for our children and their names are not a cause of bullying at all.

Only one really that's raised a smile from me in last few years was two siblings both named after wine, but the other children didn't blink at it.

Brummiegirl15 · 04/05/2014 12:55

I just want to add my bit - I have quite an unusual name - it doesn't bother me as much now as I like a bit of quirk.

However, I despised my name when I was younger - no one could say it, let alone spell it!!

I used to get so embarrassed and upset when at school we got supply teachers and they couldn't say my name. I'd feel sick waiting for my name to be read out as I knew they'd get it wrong and everyone would laugh at me and take the piss out of me. Which they did the little fuckers.

Even at my university graduation, just before I went up on stage to collect my degree, I was waiting at the bottom of the steps and the Dean hesitated (and these guys usually have phd's) and luckily looked at me and I had to whisper my name to him. Imagine having my name read out wrong at my graduation??

Even last week, I was at Starbucks near work and they write your name, I heard the barista whispering loudly to her colleague "how do I say this name?" Oh for fucks sake. And they'd spelt it wrong, to the amusement of my colleagues. And whilst I just get on with it, it does get very very weary.

So anyway op, of course what you (or anyone else) names their children, it's their choice - but please remember YOU aren't the one who has to live with the name - your child does. No child wants to feel like they stand out, because let's face it, kids are vile.

Anyway DP and are TTC and I always swore that I would give my child an original name, but not one that will make them laughed at.

That said, Monty, Dolly and Herbie are fab names

ScrambledSmegs · 04/05/2014 12:58

None of your children's names would raise so much as an eyebrow where I live. I've said it before, but unless your child is called Bag O'Shite or similar I really won't see the need to pass comment.

Will think on it and suggest a few in a mo'.

AMI88 · 04/05/2014 13:20

Love the name Kit for a boy- what could it be short for?

I'm currently struggling for uncommon boys names.

I quite like;
Teddy James
Henry Michael
Albie (stuck middle names)

Love your other names OP!

Megrim · 04/05/2014 13:38

Kit is usually short for Christopher or Katharine.

badtime · 04/05/2014 13:51

OP, I would suggest that you might want to avoid 'Bunty', as that was a comic and you already have 'Buster', which was also a comic.

(btw, on reading your names, I thought 'Dandy' would go nicely with the others, but didn't suggest it because of the comic thing).

MyrtleDove · 04/05/2014 14:15

Dolly is often short for Dolores, not Dorothy.

MyrtleDove · 04/05/2014 14:21

aliasjoey actually gpy has been considered offensive by the Roma people (the people it's used to describe) for a long time, it's just that others have never cared enough to stop using it (Roma people are some of the most historically persecuted people). Enid Blyton stories and adverts romanticising that persecution are part of the problem - it's Orientalism (look it up). Calling a child gpy is like calling a child n**r.

Lannypanny123 · 04/05/2014 15:35

MrsDeVere there's some great names there on your childrens list I think it's true you Deffo grow with confidence the more you have and also see for yourself the older the get how nobody at school etc bats an eyelid at there names.

I'm not familiar with the comic's bunty and buster bit sure if I'm too younge or just totally missed them in my childhood so it wouldn't be a issue with me,

I love hearing other people that like different names too its nice to know your not alone in MN xxxx
