Which names do you love that get a bad reception on Mumsnet? And did/would you use them?

Personally I love Kyle. The three I know are lovely and I think it has a nie sound. I probably wouldn't use it myself, but only because there are other names I love more.

Jean - I couldn't realistically use it, as DS1 is Jack, and obviously Jack and Jean both derive from John. However, even if that wasn't the case, the look of horror on my DH's face when I said I love the name spoke volumes. A straw poll of friends and family revealed he wasn't alone in his disdain for the name.

Bartholomew - whenever I've mentioned it to anyone, there is a look of horror, followed by the words, "you just couldn't do it to a child!"

Kailum. Know a little boy called it and love it and the spelling too.

Mason.

Jack. A lot of people I know think it's too plain but I love it.

Skyler!

I LOVE the name Raven too. Not brave enough to use it. And Wolfie.

PurpleWithaMysteryBun · 04/04/2014 21:54

Aubrey for a boy, beautiful.
I love Maude too.
Artemis is one of my faves if dc3 is a girl but DH is a firm no!

TheHouseCleaner · 04/04/2014 22:01

Fenella, Audrey, Ladysmith.

Queenie
Pearl
Leighton

Anjou · 04/04/2014 22:53

Oh god, almost all the names I like get a roll of the eyes from someone the rude feckers!

Atticus
Dax
Diggory
Digby
Etienne
Jago
Idris
Magnus
Taliesin

All are met with "pretentious", "that's not a name", "you're not French" or just "what?!" DS1 & DS2 have very unusual - and awesome - names. Can't tell you them as I would totally out myself. If there's ever a DS3 he'll be called one of the above names no matter how many rolling eyes I get!

pilotsprincess · 05/04/2014 03:04

Mabel for a girl Felix for a boy!

Wannabestepfordwife · 05/04/2014 10:11

Barney
Eustace- dp says it sounds like useless
Wilomena/Wilhelmina- she'd get called willy
Tiffany- sounds a bit pornstar with dps surname

HahaHarrie · 05/04/2014 10:46

Lucinda - horsey
Thomasina - a boys name made to fit a girl - they really wanted a boy
Sophia - ubiquitous

Francis - too Catholic, too feminine
Crispin - will get beaten up

vichill · 05/04/2014 10:51

Aurelia. I think it's gorgeous but my mum thinks it sounds like areola

princessdave · 07/04/2014 12:56

Joan - my grandma's name. I love it but not sure DH would agree.

Percy - DD is obsessed with Thomas the Tank Engine and Percy is her favourite. I suggested it if this baby is a boy but DH said it would get bullied. Mum said "you can't name a baby Percy" but gave no real reason why.

Delphine - I REALLY want to use it if this baby is a girl but so far DH is proving a tough nut to crack. I "won" first time around with Elodie so I'm not giving up yet!

smokeandglitter · 07/04/2014 15:49

Chardonnay (I know it's after wine but the eloquence is so lovely)
Lacey/laci
Skye
River
Skylar
Mackensie
Bailey (old fashioned boys name)
Leo
Star
Ebony

And Cassandra dp hates :-( but I do have some lovely names lined up. If I didn't have a dp but a dc would have a Chardonnay, I adore the sound despite it's connotations.

bobot · 09/04/2014 17:02

Gertie
Doris
Nell

Boys:

Pip
Ned.

Expect I'd be told they're not proper names, but I don't "do" giving a child one name and calling them by another.

Yup, I'd use them, this is the precise reason we don't discuss baby name choices with anyone other than each other!

5madthings · 09/04/2014 17:16

If dd had been a boy she was going to be Emmett, it's slated on mnet but dp and I love it, if we eever have another baby and it's a boy they will be Emmett, tho I am pissed it has now been used in the Lego movie!

sarahquilt · 09/04/2014 17:44

My daughter will be called Maedbh after the Irish Queen (pronounced Maeve). Others aren't that keen but I love it.

Libby456 · 09/04/2014 18:13

When i was younger, I wanted to call my daughter Safari.. even though i still like it(!) im glad i got talked out of it. Katie Hopkins would not let her children play with my Safari!
I love the name Riley, and Reuben. Not very popular names with my friends.

cadidog · 09/04/2014 18:25

Alanna - I was convinced I'd call my daughter this but I think it might be a bit trashy. Still love it though.
Ariel - I think of the sprite in The Tempest but most people think of washing up powder or the stupid mermaid.

mrsgumpy · 09/04/2014 20:50

I love Ariel too. For a boy or girl.

Other favourites:

Otto
Marcel
Emil

For a girl: Sabine
