Have been inspired by this thread.

So which names have you only ever heard once?

Can I start of by saying I only know one of the following, all children:

Wolfgang but I do know a wolf too.
Paris
Waldon
Sapphire
Emerald
Troy
Leonie

Baby girl named KD (Katie with an American accent). Not as in K.D. Lang. Just KD.

My students choose some pretty unique Western names - Sparky, Rusty, Candy, Mariel, Bernie

Thistledew · 22/02/2014 04:22

All girls:

Livia
Kamena
Summer
Piper
Rowena
Dea
Seren
Aishling
Wilder
Yvette

Boys:

Tanus
Ruben

I know a couple of Leonies and Grainnes and three Farahs.

My list doesn't include many non-native UK names (although Tanus' parents are Polish/South African). Talking about the attribute names common in many African countries, I did meet one lovely African who took a long time TTC their first chid. They called him Breakthrough.

FamiliesShareGerms · 22/02/2014 04:56

Jolyon
Ruben
Sebastian
Claudia

I've worked with an Australian female called Serenity.

I've worked with an African male called Sunday.

I went to school with a Leonie.

I've come across a couple of men called Dallas over the years.

I've worked with a white British woman, called Pepper. An African woman called Daffodil.

The more wild and wacky names come from either the lower end of the social scale i.e. Star, Skyla, Rogue, Raven, Justice.

Extra letters in people's names i.e. three 'e's in Lee. Or apostrophes where they are not needed.

Or the (aren't I clever) higher end of the social scale i.e. if you live in Guildford you can name your son, 'Hero'. I kid you not.

You could call your daughter, 'Petra' after the Blue Peter dog, er, I mean the ancient and Beautiful city of Petra.

I read in the newspaper that a mum had named her son, 'Feo' as she really didn't realise that it's spelled, 'Theo'.

These aren't all necessarily odd, they're just names I've only come across on real people once:

Sulekha
Silver
Ottilie (despite its apparent popularity)
Lancelot
Ashton
Jorja
Ehsan
Minouche
Rosalind (one of my favourite names)
Colette
Aletta
Rubika
Meera
Dominique
Vinca
Venka
Santiago
Pele
Vanita
Morgan (female)
Fallon
Keegan (female)

but the worst one, undoubtedly was...

...Verruca.

Merlin

Kamaran, spelt like that
Chevonne, spelt like that (is this a usual anglicisation?)

My school was full of odd names, but we did have 40+ first languages

There's an Anakin on the internal address book at work.

LabradorMama · 02/03/2014 20:01

From school -

Merriman (boy)
Willow and Rainbow (sisters)
Daun (unusual spelling of Dawn)
Britta (girl)

PFBs name is highly unusual, haven't seen it here though. We also had Kit on our boy list and Tabitha on our girl list

I once met a lovely (African) man called Welcome
