I've posted before about girls names to go with our unhelpful surname Aldock (see -
www.mumsnet.com/Talk/baby_names/a1912210-Unhelpful-surname-Chloe-or-Freya-or)
but now I need boys name suggestions please!

Again, we've had to rule quite a few we like out, eg. Jacob (Jaco Baldcock) and Aidan (which I just think doesn't sound right - and as I've said in my previous thread, I don't really like alliteration).

We like Isaac but it just wouldn't work - I's a coldcock or I suck old cock??????!!!

Though we think Zac is a possiblility - Does Zac Aldcock sound ok?

Please can you give us some suggestions (boys or girls) - it's driving me a little crazy!!!!! Thank you!

Ha, I didn't think about that particular shortening of William, and there's Will Aldcock (Well 'Ard Cock) as well. Snigger helpful

PinkGlove · 28/01/2014 16:54

Not Shaun. I immediately thought, 'Shorn Old Cock'

Joseph - LOVE
Leon - This is growing on me, like it, so too is Jared. James is nice.

BasilandLime · 28/01/2014 17:42

Zack will sound like suck old cock
Bruce would sound like bruised old cock!

You're really up against it here!!

BasilandLime · 28/01/2014 17:44

Leon aldock = lean on old cock

I think the poster who said to go for something with a definite beginning and end is on to the answer. Patrick Aldcock, Christian Aldcock

FootieOnTheTelly · 28/01/2014 18:06

Nickolas is a super name it goes well with Aldcock both in full and when shortened to Nick.

LatinForTelly · 28/01/2014 18:12

I agree it has to be something strong and straightforward. James, John, Edward, something like that. Joseph would be fine too, as you like it. You don't have to shorten it. You can't control what his friends when he's slightly older are going to do.

I know a few people with what could be considered to be embarrassing names and they rock them. Though I probably couldn't - too much of a weed.

ToffeeJungle · 28/01/2014 18:55

Ok so Shaun and Leon are out! There doesn't seem much in that I like??!

Joseph has always been a favourite of mine and that seems to be ok though DH seems to think Joe sounds a bit too feminine???!

I do like Jared though don't know if it's too harsh sounding?

Nicholas is nice but is the name of an ex!

Not keen on too traditional names like John and Edward.

As someone said, we're up against it!!!!!

Yika · 28/01/2014 20:18

I don't think Leon is problematic actually. I also don't think joe is feminine. But how about Leo, Leonard, Lincoln, Harry or Magnus?

ToffeeJungle · 28/01/2014 22:31

Leo is nice though prefer Leon.
Don't like Leonard or Magnus.
Harry is ok though where Im from it'd probably be pronounced 'Arry so Arry Aldcock doesn't sound great!
Lincoln is cool but maybe a little too out there for us.

Thanks for the suggestions though, keep them coming!

Lenny? Elliot?

I really like CharlieSmile

toastedteacake · 29/01/2014 09:09

Def. no to Patrick. (Pat Old Cock)

How about Algernon?

Algernon Aldcock.

Strong name, could be shortened if wanted but nothing obviously jumps out. Also, Algernon is one of Rupert's friends so nice connection for when small and starting to read.

ToffeeJungle · 29/01/2014 15:17

Not keen on any of those latest suggestions, sorry but thanks!

Maybe we just have to hope it's a girl????!!

Though saying that, girl's names aren't much easier either!!

BlueChampagne · 29/01/2014 15:38

Glad you've ruled out Nicholas ... Knickerless Old Cock?

I think you should start playing Hendrix's "Hey Joe" to your DH.

newyearhere · 29/01/2014 16:22

What's still on the list OP?

Jonah Aldcock
James (Jamie) Aldcock
Leo Aldcock
Jared Aldcock - no I don't think Jared is a harsh name at all

Rosieliveson · 29/01/2014 16:59

Gosh, this is proving tricky isn't it?!

Do you like

Morgan Aldcock
Joshua Aldcock
Jasper Aldcock
Freddie Aldcock
Christoper Aldcock
Toby Aldcock
Sebastian Aldcock

Sorry if I've repeated any past suggestions. I didn't reread the whole thread this time Grin

CaipirinhasAllRound · 29/01/2014 18:41

Jared is good
What about Jonny?

Yika · 29/01/2014 20:41

Lawrence
Oscar?
I think names ending in d would be good
Gerard
Conrad
Edmund
Lloyd

ToffeeJungle · 30/01/2014 09:52

Thanks again for your suggestions.

I think the current shortlist is:
Jared (though still not 100%)
Leon (sneaked back on I think!)
Joseph (still love this though still not as keen on Joe - but can live with it!)
Louis (a new one to consider)
Dominic (another new addition though not keen on Dom)
Marcus (though is this strong enough?)
Jack (another new one)

Names I like but can't use for various reasons (including the awkward surname!) but will give you more of an idea of my tastes include Aidan / Hayden, Christian, Joel, Ciaran, Nathan, Daniel, Anthony, Shaun and Zac.

Any thoughts?

I am sorry OP but I have to thank you for providing one of the funniest threads I have read in a long time. Grin I am glad someone pointed out the perils of Shawn to you - I nearly fell off the chair laughing when you suggested that one! Sorry, that is totally unhelpful of me.

To (attempt) to be helpful, these are my thoughts on a couple of your suggestions:

Leon Aldcock - I'm sorry, because I can see it is a favourite of yours, but I don't think it sounds very good. There is something jarring about having the syllables on and ald next to each other.

BUT Marcus Aldcock is a fantastic name. How can you not think Marcus is strong enough? It is a Roman name! Think Roman legionaries bestriding the known world!

ToffeeJungle · 30/01/2014 12:20

I know Dumble, I didn't think Shaun through properly did I??!! Thank goodness for Mumsnet!! Wink

Marcus may well be creeping up the shortlist though....

Love marcus and dominic.

Also think freddie aldcock works well. It's sufficiently "certain" of itself next to sur name. Doesnt sount rude. It balances the sur name.

Yika · 30/01/2014 15:55

Your short list is great, I love every name. Louis and Marcus particularly.

drspouse · 30/01/2014 16:18

My maiden name is slightly similar (starts with a vowel and contains an odd word) and for me, my mother avoided names that ended in a vowel (especially A - Emma would have become Emmur), but for my brother just went with a family name which is one of the "classic" names that someone has posted on here.

Among male family members who share this name (and how glad am I that I'm not having to pass it on to DS), we have various classic names:

David/Dave
A couple with -el names (Samuel, Daniel - I think these would actually be OK with your surname? unless they are out for a different reason).
Charles/Charlie
Robert
John

... and the youngest generation is all girls! So though one of the above mentioned is still a teenager and could produce some boys, hopefully nobody else will be inflicted with the name in the future.

PenguinsDontEatKale · 30/01/2014 16:50

Oh gosh OP, what a difficult surname. I am having a think, but my initial reaction is that something with a hard consonant sound at the end probably works best because it splits off the Aldcock and the two names as less likely to run together to make something unfortunate.

FootieOnTheTelly · 30/01/2014 16:52

I really like every name and I think they all go well with your surname. Jack, Christian and Nathan are my favourites but I genuinely think all the others are good strong names.

Joseph Aldcock rolls into one a bit but it's still a great name.

I wouldn't worry about nicknames too much.
